I dont use any listening devices while hiking the desert. I do see a lot of hikers that I cross do especially the younger generation. Last Friday while finishing an early morning hike I heard this one and took a bit to find out where it was.

Fantastic pictures. Just amazes me at how well these creatures camouflage themselves with their environment. Look at the eyes, really insane.

I used to hike with an iPod when they first came out in the early 2000s. Can't remember why I stopped but I agree it wasn't a good idea in retrospect.

Speckled snakes are chameleons. I've seen them pink, red, sandy, and granite colored. Perfectly matched to surroundings.
@Brian, yeah, I don't get people blocking out nature sounds with music. A lot to head in the wild, including a warning that might save your life.

Nice..!
I have always wondered, if I put a rock in those holes before I put my sleeping pad down on top of them will that keep the snakes from coming out??

Beautiful speckled rattlesnake. Was climbing a boulder near Otay Mtn. once and came face to face with one on a ledge, 2.5 feet away. Quickly downclimbed.

Same happened to me too. Climbing up a boulder ledge near Lucerne dry lake I came face to face with a rather large rattler. I retreated quickly! Years later near Yaqi pass, I was stepping thru a boulder field and was ready to plant my foot in a flat spot between the boulders when a huge Red Rattler reared up. I put in it reverse and could here him rattling as I sprinted away.
