New year, new thread.

Desert sunrise from the first trip of 2022:

None of these were the desert birds I was looking for:

More shots from my Borrego timelpase stacked to simulate long exposures:

Thanks. I was looking for owls or other birds of prey but only found the birds pictured and only got bird on a stick shots. I have seen owls in those areas before multiple times. I know I could always go to the campground for owls but that is less fun.

One more bird on a stick:

Anyone know anything about this:

Found on a trip that started in Rockhouse and went up into the Santa Rosa range. Google turned up nothing for me.

Stormy conditions make for better photos and timelapses. New shots, old locations and compositions.

Wow, that's quite an undertaking to get to that area from Rockhouse. I've explored Alta Seca Bench from the top, but never gone up any of the ridges from the bottom. Maybe soon though!

My idea of a fun hike is probably different than most. Toro Peak is only ~6 round trip from the upper rockhouses and Nicholias Spring.

More random shots

Only 6m from there huh? Interesting. Can you share which route?

Head up the ridge from the cottonwoods. When you hit the Santa Rosa crest, follow that to Toro. Nothing technical and navigational wise easy enough. I can add a map later but it is a simple route. Works out to ~3 miles each way. Not easy.

Something like this?

Not exactly, South portion of that line swings too far East. As drawn it probably goes but is not necessary. Straight North from the cottonwoods to the ridge that looks over the spring is what I did. Your lines looks fine for the top half. The top part gets brushy but is ducked to get through the worst of the brush.

Just beware, my idea of a fun day hike is something along the lines of 6582 or worse.

edit -> more like this:

Both routes probably go and are close enough.

Here's a pic I took from Alta Seca Bench. Is the ridge in the middle / behind the bush the same one you marked on the map?

This looks like the route I have used. Although I know I have recorded it before, I looked thru all of my tracks and couldn't find one. Lots of brush also.

Hard to tell. Looks like it might be the right one. I didn't take any pics that showed it well. Here is one part way down.

Here is more timelapse cleaned up a bit. Some new sequences from this year and a lot of the same older sequences I used previously. I cleaned up some of the technical issues. Still not perfect, still learning. I need to stabilize one of the sequences in post, the tripod was not steady enough in the high winds.

Click the image to play.

Last milky way shot looks like the culp valley / pinyon campsite at the end of the road near the trail to pinyon ridge.

Correct. I've scouted that site out before for milky way shots, never got around to shooting there until last weekend.

I usually try and get birds in flight instead of bird on a stick shots. I couldn't get the doves to cooperate.

For time lapse, how about watching one of those small sandy wash belly bushes creating that swirly pattern in the sand as the wind blows the branches back and forth? Or maybe an ant hill being formed? got make them unique to ABDSP so it's not "just another one of those swirly bush/ant hill" time lapse videos...wink

@rockhopper nice cacti. They bloomed well this year, nothing else did that I saw.

@dsefcik I actually thought of doing the branch and swirly sand pattern in the wind. Bad, windy weather makes for really good timelapse conditions.

I don't know why but LightRoom keeps messing up my flickr that is used to host images. It breaks the old photo embeds. That is why old posts sometimes don't have all the images anymore. I don't know which photos some had originally so I won't fix it.

Here are some new images:

That would be correct. Trail looked pretty well trimmed. Water is currently flowing all the way out to the citrus orchards at the end of the pavement. I didn't feel like wet feet so didn't go any further.

The sand verbena and stars shot was just enough breeze for the flowers to be too blurry. I was trying to get the flowers sharp and the stars as out of focus balls.

Thanks. That is an IR image of the ramp in black and white. I hiked across Clark Dry Lake to find some interesting patterns. I had to avoid the car doing donuts on the lake bed mid day.

I have no idea if the Nikon P1000 is good or not, but I can say the hobby is expensive if you get hooked.

I will start a new thread for 2023 photos.
