Mary and I did a quick overnight trip out to Pinyon Wash with plans on revisiting the Native American village site in Harper Flat. On our drive up Pinyon Wash we drove by Nolan's camper truck with no sign of Nolan so we continued on.
Happy to see our favorite camping site was available
Tried out a new grill Pie Iron we received for Christmas
Semi healthy camp version of an egg mcmuffin
Walking into Harper Flat
Large mortero filled with water from the recent rains
Mary checking out the morteros
Pottery shards
Mary checking the view in Harper Flat
Great overnight trip. Made us realize we need to get out to Anza Borrego more often. edited by surfponto on 1/20/2016

Nice trip Bob. Water-filled morteros are one of my favorite things.

Love Harper Flat. We've backpacked into there many times. Short easy walk and most times very peaceful and people free.

Lot of damp ground out there from the recent rains.

I agree.
Have you ever hiked in from Harper Canyon? Curious what that is like?

Hi Bob, yeah that was me out there. Surprised we did not see you as we were also exploring the ancient village sites. I was parked in that location because I needed cell phone reception and that is one of the only spots to get it. Did you see Ranger D.L out there? What days were you out?
not to hijack your thread, but
Here are some pics from the trip
These are called cupules correct? Does anyone know the what the significance of these is?
Nice village site that looked like it was just yesterday that it was occupied
pano of Harper Flat
Pinyon wash at sunset, notice the sun rays on the camper. This is a really nice campsite as I still got cell phone reception and the last rays of the sun on my solar panels.
huge pottery shard
ram horns: ****IT IS ILLEGAL TO TAKE THESE*** and everytime I have been up Pinyon Wash I have seen the rangers
huge metate
multi use metates, this site is amazing and I could almost see all the ancients at work and hear their voices
More cupules and it looks like some kind of other design that is slowly weathering away
Bob, did you find this location?
This was one of my favorite areas.

Hi Nolan, I am not sure how we missed you. We camped at the end in your old spot. We were there Sunday and Monday then drove over to the Cactus Garden towards Fish Creek. You are right cell signal is a little better down the wash and the sunlight lasts a little longer..
No I haven't seen that one site you asked about. I need to spend a couple days out there. Yep Ranger D.L. came up to check on our metal fire ring. :-) Great pics.

I have been up into Harper Flat by coming up Harper Canyon only once. Definitely worth doing. It was a great hike but much longer and much more elevation gain than coming up through Pinyon Wash. I also have come into Harper Flat from Fish Creek Wash near Split Rock and Dave McCain Spring. Here is a link to the TR from the Harper Canyon trip. http://www.anzaborrego.net/anzaborrego/forum/topic180-harper-canyon-to-harper-flat.aspx

Bob and Nolan, it's ok to drive in Pinyon wash huh? But not in Harper valley or Harper flat correct? Have either of you check out Hapahah Flat? I hear there's Indian village there as well.

Yea, Harper Valley/Harper Flat are off limits to vehicles, although every time out there I have seen motorcycle tire tracks going through there.
check out one of my trip reports from a couple years ago http://www.anzaborrego.net/anzaborrego/forum/topic388-hapaha-flat-dave-mcain-spring-split-rock.aspx
wow my kids are growing up fast!
Love going through, fish creek all the way to Hapaha flat, there is so much out there to explore. Indian sites/signs of habitation are everywhere out there. Every time I go out I am in awe that wherever I am you will find pottery shards, morteros, metates, you name it.

great shots there in that other thread! Yeah my girls are getting big too. So the easiest fastest way to get to Harper Flat is from Split rock? I'm thinking about coming in from The Squeeze, down the dropoff and parking and checking out Harper Dams and the Cabin if I can find it. then going to Harper Flat sometime, I'd love to check out some more Indian habitation sites.

The Harper dam is pretty cool. Not much left of the cabin but still fun to check out.
