My boyfriend and I are going to camp at the Borrego Palm Canyon campsite to see the milky way. I read on a post in this forum that Blair Valley would be the best place, but it is about 30 miles from our campsite. Would our campsite be sufficient to see the milky way or would you recommend cancelling our reservation and camp at a primitive campsite somewhere in Blair Valley? Or would just driving there and finding a place to park and watch the stars be sufficient as well? Any help, advice, or tips is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi c00kie22, generally the best places to see the stars are the places with the least amount of "city" light. Palm Canyon campsite may suffer from some light pollution from Borrego Springs. Blair Valley is a bit more remote and will offer some darker skies. I think either location will provide you with great night sky viewing but if you can opt for some darker sky locations you will see more stars. Go to watch the stars but also go to enjoy the desert and the vast remoteness it offers, sometimes the stars are only the side attraction.

I agree that you will get some light polution from Borrego Springs and possibly the camp ground but I suspect the view you will have will still be fabulous compared to what you see closer to San Diego city. It is all relative. The further from light polution and air polution the better the Milky Way will appear. San Diego city not so good, Borrego Palm Canyon pretty good, Blair Valley or Bow Willow area quite good.

Culp Valley is not too far from Borrego Palm Canyon and has the advantage of elevation. It would be easy to drive there from Borrego Palm Canyon to see if it is better than Borrego Palm Canyon area.

Thank you everyone for your responses! Sorry for my late response, Chinese New Year kept me busy. Culp Valley it is! Hopefully, I can borrow my brother's DSLR and take some great pictures. I'll post them here if they're any good. Thank you again!
