Hard to call it a trip report since it is really a sub one mile hike. That being said apparently Box Canyon is a historically significant area that everyone should check out.
We always drive right by but finally decided to stop.

You're right Bob, I too have driven by the monument numerous time and never stopped! Would suggest everyone check out Wikipedia's article on the Mormon Battalion. An amazing story even more apropos in view of our recent presidential election, the battalion has numerous additional local monuments most (including myself) are not familiar with. Tom

It is a great piece of history. Love the old stories about Anza Borrego. Would love to find some old pictures of wagons traversing the canyon Bob

The butterflies were cool. There were hundreds of them and some were even posing for pictures

I have not been to that area in years. We "hiked" it when I was a cub scout. I remember it was really hot, but the best part was the adults gave us crackers and beef jerky to represent the diet of dried beef and hard tack biscuits I guess. I remember thinking how cool it would be to eat beef jerky and soda crackers all the time. Also didn't realize how short it was, everything seems a lot longer when you are only 8 : )

I like that area and hiked it a year ago. Like others have said here, the Mormon Battalion history is very interesting. These were tough folks in the days before Goretex. Apparently, you can find some rust marks in east county (maybe in Box Canyon too?) from the repeated traverses of wagon wheels through ruts in the rock. Nice butterfly photos. - Jim

Thanks Jim We looked for the marks that are suppose to be visible in Box Canyon but couldn't find them. The butterflies were cool. There were hundreds of them. I think out of 50 pictures I took 3 came out Love digital photography. Bob
