I didn't notice animal tracks in the mud but there were plenty in the sand. The cottonwoods area looked like a mountain lion highway, just as it did last year when Rocko and I were there.
On another note, I found a pair of glasses near 33.483192°N 116.403909°W (not that exact location, just that vicinity). If anyone here lost them, I've got them.
Great trip report Brian!! How far were you able to drive in toward Hidden Spring ? |

How not to get stuck?

I totally agree with Bufords ideas. I would add to keep your drive axle on the road as much as you can. I have pulled out a lot of people who back up off the road and now your drive wheels are in even soft material. I would highly recommend a locker if you have a two wheel drive. On a side note, in 1979 I pulled over on 78 near the narrows to check a map. My Opal Cadet was stuck right off the pavement. The motorhomes and trucks going to Glamis and Ocotillo Wells just honked as they drove by !! |

Dawns Peak Day Hike

Outstanding trip report. That is the toughest hike in Borrego. We have done the trip both as a day hike and an overnight. The day hike we camped the night before at the trailhead on Rockhouse road. We left before sunrise and like you came back in the dark. The overnight we spent the night in the flats before the final ascent to Dawns. We also spent the night on Dawns when we traversed the Santa Rosas from Toro to Villager. I like the overnight version to Dawns. Pack super light, no stove etc because it is all water weight. Thanks for posting |

Brian... missed you by a few days. Went out and camped at the mouth of Cougar canyon for three days. Hiked South Fork Sheep's Canyon, Hiked Cougar and on Friday did Schad's route from Box Canyon over to Hidden Springs. Have never done this before. Really cool to follow the old Native American trail that is still in great shape. While on top we were talking about your route up to Dawns. Very impressive !! Very large mountain lion tracks in Box Canyon. Even though I moved to Arizona, I still get about four trips to Borrego each year. Wish the bypass road was not as well maintained. A lot more traffic up there. Funny a lot of Jeeps come up and just turn around and leave. |

Congratulations Darren !! I retired 7 years ago and never looked back. Love the ability to go mid week without the crowds. Moved to Fountain Hills in Arizona, so many hiking trails 5 minutes from my house Still get back to Borrego about 4 times a year. Enjoy. I hope the blog keeps going. It is so helpful |

The Santa Rosas Sawmill Trail (Sort Of)

Did a car camping trip to Toro Peak last September. Nice place to explore without the desert heat. About a half mile before the gate at the peak is a very nice campsite on the left. About 8200’ level. Flat with a large rock fire pit. A nice day hike is exploring the Alta Seca bench. This is a high valley just east of Toro Peak. Also the forest service website has information on if the lower gate is locked due to snow. San Bernardino Forest website. |

Wow. That would be a tough one. Was in Rock house earlier this year, the road is completely impassable about a mile before Hidden Spring. When we were exploring the Alta Seca Bench, we hiked down to the area where the old topographical maps show the Native American trail crossing the ridge line. We had plenty of time and could find no evidence of the old trail coming up from the upper rock hoses in Rock House Valley. I think my days of doing a day hike from the cottonwoods to Toro and back are over !! |
