5/17/2016 Topic: Rockhouse Cyn Wildflower Blooms in May dsefcik Administrator	Gary and I spent 4 days backpacking in Rockhouse Canyon a couple weekends ago and I was suprised by all of the bright, beautiful wildflower blooms we saw. Most were at and above the 3,000' level or so, mainly starting around the base of the Santa Rosa ridge line but some extended down into Rockhouse Canyon Valley area. We got rained on 2 days and endured heavy winds most of the trip but it was fun, backpacking in Rockhouse Canyon never gets boring. Water at the springs was lower then normal which was a surprise. Color photos taken with Garmin Montana 680t GPS. B/W taken with an Olympus XA 35mm & TMax 100 film developed Pyrocat-HD. Happy Mothers Day, I found this balloon heading back to our cars, literally on Mothers Day..!! Total Mylar Balloons this trip - 9 ---- edited by dsefcik on 5/17/2016

Here are some pics from my GPS, I did not take a camera this trip. Old cowboy camp stuff folding tables in a rock shelter Crapper water spigot tom earning his critter credits the pretty (and funky smelling) plants tom liked so much the second water hole we find total balloons that trip was probably 10 or so, no picture but look at the side pocket of my pack in the ejection seat photo and you will see the bulge from just the first day of collecting --

7/4/2016 Topic: Sheep Count 2016 dsefcik Administrator	We had 40 unique sheep in Rattlesnake Spring, about 50% less than normal, weather was much cooler and sheep did not seem interested in drinking, many just lounged around the water hole all day without drinking at all. I did not take my heavy digital camera and 600mm lens this year, instead I just took a trail camera and hung on it on a mesquite nearby, here is my meager attempt at stitching together the hundreds of photos and videos it captured over the 3 day weekend.

One of the projects was the Aral Sea. I remember meeting and working with Sally Ride at the time. Thanks for bringing back some very fond memories for me, I really enjoyed working there and with all of the amazing people who were mentoring the project.

11/13/2016 Topic: Parking in McCain Valley for Hiking dsefcik Administrator	you can park at the campground in a camp spot and pay the fee you can park at the campground near the east side bathrooms for "day" hiking you can park anywhere along the way on the main road or at the end of the road wherever it is legal to park i have done all three with no problems, of course i don't leave my wallet on the dashboard or anything, in fact i leave the car empty and a few water bottles and pop top canned food items in the bed of my truck in easy view of anyone that may wander by.

1/7/2017 Topic: Route Advice for IP/Canebrake/Red Top dsefcik Administrator	I think it is doable without the Red Top section....if you are set on Red Top you may be better served starting in the north fork of Indian Valley and going over the small saddle near the quad "17" imprinted on the topo map. There is a small parking spot right off the main road and traces of an old indian trail you can follow up and over. The Crawford ranch is fenced so you will know where not to go if you decide to go down the Torote cyn route. There is so much to see and explore out there it is hard (for me) to focus on just hiking fast, we are always stopping to check out some cool plants, llizards, bighorn or cultural/historical stuff....same some time for that.

Toro Spring also has water but the seven leaf cultivators use that area so be careful when near that area.

You will have plenty of water at the cottonwoods. We can usually carry enough water for 3 days in this weather, 6 liters would easily get me thru 2 days in these temps. Just my 2 cents.

I was in that exact same spot near table mtn a couple weeks ago, was gonna go down to the spring but stopped near where that photo is taken and hiked around a bit. That was the weekend of the mass crowds in ABDSP, I didn't see a single sole that whole day out there though.

4/20/2017 Topic: Border Patrol dsefcik Administrator	I remember reading somewhere awhile back that BP either partners with the navy or they use some of their helicopters, maybe retired ones or such and you will see them flying over key areas of the desert all the time, Carrizo Gorge, Canebrake/Inner Pasture are well known areas for activity. As Ranger Steve (RIP) would always say, "they have non permitted sensors" all over those areas and you will most likely set them off while hiking. If you encounter BP out the field just talk to them, they have lots of good info about the area and they have always been friendly to me, they have told me where to find rock art and Bighorn Sheep. I have never had any problems with them, even at the checkpoints. They are real people just doing their job.

5/13/2017 Topic: Villager Peak dsefcik Administrator	Personally I would recommend an overnight trip, spend the night up on Rabbit (or nearby with a view of the Salton Sea) and watch the sunrise over the Salton Sea, that is one of my favorites for sure, anywhere up on the Rosa's watching the sunrise is magical.
