Has anyone been following the Tamarisk removal at the Carrizo Marsh? 200 acres to be removed with environmental mitigation money from the Ocotillo wind generators. |

The park has closed the area so its hard to see whats going on. They burned 50 acres last October and have been running a bulldozer all winter. I hope they don't close it forever like they did the Carrizo Impact Area. They did a good job removing the Tamarisk in Carrizo Gorge. There are many thousands of Smoke Trees sprouting there. |

The owner of the Crawford ranch, Larry, died in the summer of 2013. It went up for sale in the early fall of that year. Unfortunately the Anza Borrego Foundation was not interested in buying the property. Between October and December of 2013, the canyon was open to hikers with permission to cross Canebrake. The new owners have since closed all access, fixed the road up the canyon and built a helicopter pad among other things. They now come and go by private helicopter. |

I,m talking about inner pasture. You need to go through Canebrake to get to the gate in Canebrake Canyon. Canebrake roads are all private, you need permission to drive through or walk through |

It,s not closed for obvious reasons. The navy cleaned it up and returned it to the park. Then some idiot was digging for scrap metal and got hurt. In the 30's, citizens donated money to buy that area for the park, then the Navy "borrowed" it for the war effort. It is as safe as anywhere and it is the most beautiful part of the park. Funny story; The Crawfords of inner pasture, found a tank and took off the top. The drove that thing around in the 50's and 60's. |

Just because one archaeologist says Yonis are natural doesn't make it so. Lots of studies say otherwise. The local tribes themselves say they did it. Goggle Native American fertility yonis. Or you can buy a book (study paper) at the ABNHA store in Borrego Springs. |

It's a study from the university in San Diego. I first heard about them in 1975 from my Geology professor. It seems someone switched a slide and put in it's place a photo of "Queen Rock" in JT. The class roared with laughter. He then told us about the native fertility rituals and called them Yonis. I found Queen rock in the early '90's in a side canyon near The Wonderland of Rocks. They were carved from natural cracks near village sites in easily accessible areas mostly in the general area of southern ABDSP. There is a good one just off the east bound 8 on the south side between Jacumba and the tower. There are a lot around Piedras Grande including the most famous one by the eastern shelter cave. This is near the road closure. If I knew how to post pictures I could show you 10 to 20 of them. Ziphius, I will get the information on the book when I return from Canebrake next weekend. |

I,m sure the geologists said " There does not appear to be any recent signs of enhancement and the surface appears to be naturally weathered". A follow up question should be " In what time frame would signs of enhancement be erased by natural weathering" There unanimous answer would be " Ummm, I guess maybe 300 to 500 years depending on many unknown factors". Tommy750 is correct with his info on Charlotte's study, But he must not have read her conclusion. She writes "Four Yonis appear to have been altered by pecking, grinding or carving,or carving. (7 others) appear to have been enhanced to make them more closely resemble their human counterpart, the vulva." She also wrote in her conclusion "In many cases, the yonis are directly incorporated into village sites." Once you have seen as many as I have, you develop a feel for what is altered and what is natural. |

The best way into Inner Pasture is mile 41 canyon. There used to be a road up this canyon, but it washed out years ago. I've been over the pass from Indian C. It's a good way into Upper Canebrake to see the Skeleton man pictograph. I've also been over from Torote to just above Crawford's old place. It's a nice way to go but kind of far. Moonlight is shorter than Mile 41 but rougher. Enjoy! |

The Canebrake herd is here in Canebrake and the canyons just above all the time. I have seen up to 15 at a time. Next month they will mostly hang out in Agua Caliente. They are usually still there in September. They cross S-2 to graze just north of Agua Caliente, mid day, this time of year. The mail lady sees them almost every day in the hot months. She hit a huge Ram and totaled her car there two years ago. The County will not put up a Bighorn crossing sign there. |

Lots of Bighorns in the Agua Caliente Campground in the last few days. They come into the camp to drink in the middle of the day. Several just above the pool on Monday. |

I went out yesterday and only saw one Tamarisk. Lots of Mesquite and Cat tail. The biggest difference. Lots of Cane is growing in many areas and there was water out past the tractor near the rock house. The rock house has a new roof to protect it from the sun and they cleaned up the area. My wife would not let me drive through the crusted over mud hole to reach the Carrizo Stage Station Site, So I did not see that portion of the swamp. The gate was unlocked and the closure sign was gone so I guess its open again for good. |

A fire is burning 8 miles West of Canebrake. It is burning up hill towards Mt. Laguna 2 miles away. A large bulldozer is heading toward the ranch improving the road for fire trucks. I hope they don't make a road through the Wilderness past the pepperwood Trail. |

Some local folks don't know the difference between Inner Pasture and Upper Canebrake Canyon. It's actually west of Pepperwood Canyon/ trail, on the seep slope of the Laguna Mts. You can't even see it from the Canebrake community. The firemen are at our community center for meals and rest but the action is at Agua Caliente air strip. I have to assume the bulldozer stopped at or before the ranch because the are flying in all the firefighters. I hear the owner of the ranch got in trouble for entering the area with his own helicopter. |

This fire was lit by the smuggler because they would not have made it. We had a fire in the canyon in 2008 that was lit to escape from the border patrol. It's funny that the cause is still undetermined for both fires. Politicly correct? |
