A friend of mine wants to 4WD through Canebrake Canyon into the Inner Pasture. I was under the impression that the road through Canebrake is gated (though I did see ATV tracks of some sort in Inner Pasture a couple of weeks ago). If anyone has information on vehicular access through Canebrake onwards toward Inner Pasture, I'd appreciate the 411. Thanks. - Jim

Canebrake is private property, you would have to ask permission to access the area. Hiking or helicopter is your best bet.

Thanks, I was hoping to hear that, because I'm glad there are some sections of ABDSP where hikers can go without encountering vehicles. I'm assuming that hiking the road in from Canebrake also has private property issues, as the road is privately-maintained? I realize there are other start points for hiking into that area but was especially curious about the Canebrake route. Thanks again. - Jim

Just the mouth of canebrake at crawford ranch is private. You can access it from moonlight canyon, an unnamed drainage from inner pasture, the north fork of Indian canyon or the pepperwood trail from mc cain valley. It is actually illegal to land a helicopter in blm wilderness in including the sawtooth mountain wilderness study area which covers canebrake inner pasture and el potrero canyon

Those are all the popular and most used routes in. I am curious, do you have some reference material about landing a helicopter on blm wilderness in the areas you referenced?

While that reference is very vague I did find more specific reference to helicopters in other blm materials. Thank you for pointing that out, I will be sure to relay this information to the pilot who we flew with and make note for any future flights.

The owner of the Crawford ranch, Larry, died in the summer of 2013. It went up for sale in the early fall of that year. Unfortunately the Anza Borrego Foundation was not interested in buying the property. Between October and December of 2013, the canyon was open to hikers with permission to cross Canebrake. The new owners have since closed all access, fixed the road up the canyon and built a helicopter pad among other things. They now come and go by private helicopter.

I,m talking about inner pasture. You need to go through Canebrake to get to the gate in Canebrake Canyon. Canebrake roads are all private, you need permission to drive through or walk through

Too bad the park wasn't able to acquire the land. Appreciate the update. Might explain the helo I saw out there on an otherwise quiet trip. The occasional helo overflight is much better than the alternative possibility of 4wd traffic in that region though. edited by ziphius on 5/13/2015

Any updates on this thread or info on accessing Canebrake? I have hiked in from Pepperwood / Cottonwood, and it's lovely, but I need to find a way to cut the hike down via drivable roads, and hoped to get in via Canebrake Canyon via S2 (so I can show to some non-physically able hikers). Info is greatly appreciated!! I have a rugged FJ Cruiser, so can wrangle most roads no problem.

You can't go through Canebrake, It's trespassing. There is a camera at the gate. The roads in Canebrake are private not public.

Canebrake Valley and Inner Pasture (except for the small old Crawford ranch private inholding plugging the Canebrake Canyon mouth) are ABDSP and BLM (Sawtooth Mountains) Wilderness. They are NOT private. Usually no motorized vehicles are allowed in BLM Wilderness lands but not sure about whether driving on Canebrake dirt roads after passing through the private inholding with permission is allowed. BLM El Centro would know. Of course Border Patrol can do what they want.

Canebrake is hike in only, shortest route is via Indian Gorge north fork.
BLM Wilderness designated areas are off limits to any "mechanized" vehicles, not just "motorized", that includes bicycles, human powered carts, wheel barrows, skateboards, etc...foot traffic and horses are allowed.

There were fresh tire tracks in January in Inner Pasture. There was even a sign directing BP down a certain road at a junction to return to S2. The roads in Inner Pasture didn’t look like they got much traffic. Most of all is probably BP.
I hiked in via Indian Gorge. edited by Buford on 2/28/2019

It's not uncommon to see tracks from local residents and/or BP, I have seen both. But otherwise, it is technically off limits to any mechanized vehicles unless pre-approved by BLM or whoever in agency and in non accessible in a vehicle via public land. Of course you will also see motorcycle/atv traffic from McCain area that makes it's way down Pepperwood.
