Very cool...
I now have a new item on my list for next years BHS count, a measuring stick...we wanted to measure the volume of water in the spring but could only guess while the bees swarmed us.
That document you linked to suggests an occupation period of 10,000 years on the island and with European artifacts found it dates into the historic period. Have you found any evidence of human habitation?
I am also very curious about any wildlife you see there, your post does not mention any wildlife.
Very cool, thanks for posting.

Wow! Amazing trip! I love the channel islands. We actually just got back from a camping/kayak trip on and around anacapa island. The seal/sea lion population seemed very healthy and the kids had a blast hearing them bark. The seagull population was out of control and wasn't very peaceful at any time of day! I don't see any seagulls in yourr pics, do they not nest on the island? I will try and post a couple pics of anacapa as well.

here are a few pics from ANACAPA ISLAND
You take the ferry out (www.islandpackers.com) and drops you off at the dock...It was a bit challenging getting the kayak in the water :0
seal and sea lion colonies all over the island..
and lots of dolphins
campsites on the island are about a 1 mile hike in
Notice the other camper in the background, he paddled his kayak solo from Oxnard which is about 13 miles open ocean paddle (and he is about 60+ years old!) that guy is stud!

Wow, San Nicolas looks like a totaly different geology. I did a report on the channel islands back in the 1970's in high school. I have only set foot on Catalina several times. There is great history on the channel islands. Imagine back in 1542 when Cabirllo encountered "numerous" natives on canoes circling his boat at the "islands". Heck he even died there. He is supposed to be buried on Anacapa but some say Catalina. His burial mound has never been found..... http://socalhistory.org/biographies/juan-rodriguez-cabrillo.html
btw I am partial to remaining by the coast in August <em>edited by rockhopper on 8/4/2012</em>

Great reading, I also looked at the islandpackers site and the NPS Channel Island site http://www.nps.gov/chis/index.htm which really makes you want to pack up and go there!

Great report. Google Earth has a nice view of the island with a few panoramio pics. I see several pics from boats in the harbor at the south end with quite a few craters not too far away. No offshore exclusionary zone?
