Don't you worry they will get into a cactus or something? I don't take Lola out with me because bulldogs don't tolerate the heat.

That along with rattlesnakes. upset
We usually keep them close when we bring them and keep them on a long leash. We have had a few incidents of cactus thorns in their paws but in general they stay close to camp.

Daren;
Is that a different Son, or just older?
I thought I remembered a bigger picture
of your avatar that included your son, and
he was quite a bit younger.

Bob, excellent post but you know I could fill pages with pics of my dog. Here are 3 to start.

Here is Wylie, my 105 lb hiking buddy. He is a 4 year old Golden Retriever. Here he is cooling off in the shade of a canyon wall on a desert backpack trip outside the park boundary. I carry a multi-tool with pliers to remove thorns, he has booties he wears sometimes to help his feet. He carries his own food and water when he backpacks with me. Sometimes I carry his pack for a while to give him a break but he NEVER offers to carry my pack.

Wylie would much rather hike in the Sierra than in the desert. He loves the mountains much more than the sand and cactus. Here he is smelling the flowers below Temple Crag along the North Fork of Big Pine Creek.

Of course his favorite thing to do is swim. Here he is swimming in one of the Wonder Lakes at 11,580' this past June. Notice most of the lake is frozen but it didn't seem to matter. If there is water he is going in. He will even go for a swim with his pack on.

Can you tell yet that I LOVE this dog!

Yes, different son...I have three. My oldest goes hiking/camping with me when he can.

My dog does not do well in the heat either and when I do take him with me I keep him out of the cactus..he would kill himself chasing jackrabbits if I did not.

Great shots.
No I have heard chihuahuas are tough little dogs.
We got charged by a pack of them down in San Quintin last year smile

Here are some pics of our dog Goliath. He loves camping and hiking. His name does not suit him, but he came with it when we adopted him from my daughter's friend's grandma. We just call him "Buddy" or "The Grudge" for the way he crawls under the bed. Seems she was moving and couldn't take him with her. He used to be a "Condo Dog" but now has plenty of room to romp and play, chase chickens, and go camping. I never had a dog as a kid, so was hesitant to take him in, but now we are more than best buds and he goes most everywhere with us. He sometimes gets excited and will run himself until he keels over, so we have to watch him a little, but he doesn't roam too far from us. Even though he is not the sharpest tool in the shed, we love him. (I think that is what my parents said about me) smile

Copilot in the Motorhome somewhere in AZ

Copilot in the Samurai near Sedona, AZ. Asleep on the toolboxes "Bucky" the Samurai during a long and super rough ride. Not sure how he managed to sleep

Torote Canyon, ABDSP. It was only about 70 degrees, but he managed to run himself until we had to stop him, dig a hole in the cool sand and rest for a long time.

Kern River with his lovely sweater

He will ride in anything, as long as he gets to go

This is Rusty "love dog". I think he could be Wylies brother. He will be 4 in January. He has yet to see anza borrego...mainly due to my fear of the cholla getting in his paws, and already having my hands full with 2 human kids out there as well.

I think you are right Nolan. Here is Wylie a little farther up the same trail that Rusty is on, but as usual he is wet from swimming.
