I lost my GPS going down into Canebrake so on a different trip I did the reverse of that loop looking for it. We have done many variations of that coming in from McCain. I have seen that chain at Sombrero before, no idea what it is for. Is the register still missing? It used to be an ammo box chained to the top boulders but went missing several years ago. Great trip report, thanks for sharing

Can't say if there is water now but in general there is water in those areas. Several years ago there was water at the spring above sheep cyn.

To keep my herniated L3/4/5 discs happy over the last few years I don't carry my DSLR anymore so photos are usually from my phone. Damn wind turbines are now visible from anywhere near Sombrero. We camped the first night a few miles S/W of Sombrero and saw nothing but blinking red lights all night long. McCain Valley is special....period. Nights were pretty windy and cold, 38 every night. 3rd night on Pepperwood we had a handful of undocumented travelers pass our camp looking to do the same, once I told them Gary snores pretty bad they decided to move on..haha....I am the one who snores. There are some cool old State Park signs still around I bought some Pencott Badlands fabric and made my own gear...maybe I went too far? Looking down towards Bow Willow from McCain Valley Me in the early morning with Sombrero Peak in the background Found a Radiosonde

That one looks like is fairly new. 5 liters each but there are a couple of water sources out there but it is pretty dry right now, we had to dig one spring out and wait until morning to get water. I have found a few radiosondes but this was the nicest. It was complete with about 50' of string, parachute, balloon and glow stick. My understanding is that two of these get launched every day from Kearny Mesa and are supposed to make it out to Arizona. If you find one in the desert then something probably went wrong with it's flight.

4/30/2018 Topic: McCain Valley dsefcik Administrator	Just a 2 day trip out with Tom, found another water source in the valley and enjoyed some peaceful outdoor time with what is is left of nature out there. I am really enjoying the short 2 day backpack trips, plenty of time to explore and time to enjoy backpacking with only a small amount of items needed to carry. Tom and I have spent a lot of time in McCain Valley over the last few years and we have a good knowledge of water sources and the landscape as a whole. Tom has some really great photos from this trip, hopefully he will post some. Packrat Midden From the North American Packrat Midden Database: Middens are waste piles that packrats construct out of fecal matter and urine. Packrats incorporate pieces of plant material, bone, and other items they habitually collect from their environment into their middens. The packrat’s sticky, viscous urine acts like a cement which binds the midden material together into a solid mass. Weather was pretty good, maybe low 80's during the day and about 50 at night. I mostly just needed to get out for a couple days and that is a good area with water. I picked up another radiosond and managed to find a new active water source. Wildlife was mostly birds, rabbits a dead coyote and tons of field mice at night running all over my gear and sleeping bag...I was kinda wishing I had Tom's tent that night. This is probably 6 now and I have two I need to drop off at NOAA There were a few cactus blooms on the hillsides Busted metate next to spring pipe Some mexican bottles near the water Not sure if this was natural or predator induced This must have been the calf trough Anybody know these guys? My custom made bivy sack & backpack in Pencott Badlands pattern These guys came out like ants when the sun set, they were everywhere all over my gear and bivy sack Total Mylar balloons - 5 --

We did the rounds on the springs to make sure they were in good order and only noted the spring at Cowboy had been messed up by someone who probably thought they were helping. The branches that we placed to keep the animals from breaking down the rock build up were all tossed aside and the aluminum tent stake we had stashed to help clean out the piping was gone. We fixed it all back up and got it flowing good again. Lots of new cairns were put up, looked like whoever did it was losing the trail and putting ducks up wherever they went. 2 nights at the Cottonwoods with a full day exploring the western Santa Rosa mountains below Toro Peak. Lots of now defunct Mary Jane plantations. Plenty of interesting artifacts still around Defunct camp base Even Mary Jane cultivators have dental hygiene This was interesting, they placed a single bottle with a drip line to feed a single grow Pit used to capture water form a nearby spring and then draw the irrigation lines down the grow areas Varmit protection or hiker scare tactic? Plenty of grow supplies We were excited to find a new water hole even with wildlife Managed to pick up another radiosonde, looks like it had a crash landing On our way back to the Cottonwoods we saw some fresh mountain lion tracks and then ran into this large scat. My phone is about 6.5" long, this scat was pretty big Red Man looked in good shape and the cactus bloom was a pretty addition View from upper rockhouse area looking down towards the lower rockhouses Bees were busy with the blloms that were coming out Super deep morteros New scat to me, anybody know what critter this is from? There is an old indian trail out there we cleared the brush on for about 3 miles...spent most of the day doing that. Somebody also hauled out a pair of brush clippers we had stashed. Seems like somebody thought they were helping by removing the "trash" at the site.

Rocko1, I do not know your experience or capabilities, especially in the desert...in the summer...however for most folks, venturing out 8+ miles for a backpack trip into the desert in the summer with 105+ temps and relying on a water source to provide is a risk for anyone of any skill or knowledge level. When we head out for trips where water sources may be suspect we always, always bring enough to get us in to the first source and back in case it is dry. That may demand carrying 8 liters the first day. That said...the upper reaches of Nicholias Cyn near the cottonwoods as described in Schad's book should have water, it was flowing just fine a few weeks ago. I have never been out there in June/July/August so use that information at your own risk. RHC is especially lonely in the summer and cell phones do not work but HAM works great off Toro. PM me for more info you like, let us know if you venture out!

6/13/2018 Topic: 2-3 Day Trip Recommendation? dsefcik Administrator	The other possibility is to park up at Toro peak and make your way down to the cottonwoods. Assuming there is water (which I would be surprised if there was not) you could base camp there and do some day hikes into the surrounding RHC area. This is a fairly common route even during non summer months. The only drawback is you will have to climb 3,000' to get back to your car. Toro is at 8,000+ and the cottonwoods are at 5,000 so the temps should better than down on the desert floor.

7/4/2018 Topic: 2018 BHS Count Results dsefcik Administrator	Great reaports everybody....I would concur that the wind on Friday was pretty bad, we had to re-enforce our shade shelter to keep it up. Day temps were 95/100 and night temps I did not pay attention to other than to say it was cooler than normal. We saw BHS each day with a few repeats and several collared/tagged BHS. Lamb count was way down, we normally see a lot of lambs but this year was only 8. Our day temps with the thermometer under our shade tarp were 95/95/100 for the three days. Normally temps are 112+. If the count was this weekend things would have been different.
