Greetings! I've lurked on this forum for some time now and have enjoyed reading everyone's trip reports from Anza Borrego. So I figured it was time to join. My name is John and I live in El Cajon with my wife, Autumn and 19 month old daughter, Audrey. We love getting out into the back country to camp and explore. I enjoy hiking out to Goat Canyon to see the old railroad trestle, as well as Maidenhair Falls in Hellhole Canyon. Other favorites include Coyote Canyon, Fish Creek/Split Mountain, Sandstone Canyon, Dos Cabezas, Carrizo Creek, Arroyo Tapiado, Arroyo Seco Del Diablo Canyon, Vallecito Wash, Painted Gorge, Carrizo Mountain, the Yuha Desert and much more.

My last trip on out to the desert was a prerun for an annual event (BorregoFest) that's hosted by another forum out in ABDSP. Here are a few photos and link to the full trip report:

Last year we had Lowell and Diana Lindsay as guest speakers on Friday evening discussing the many new sculptures that grace the Anza Borrego Desert. This year Diana and Lowell will again join us for a special presentation at 8:30 PM on Friday evening, 10/19/12. The topic will be one of Anza Borrego's most famous residents - Marshal South. The presentation will take place at the community room at the Butterfield Ranch Resort. Diana will have several of her books available for sale, including "the Anza Borrego Desert Region", books on Marshal South, and books on other areas of interest for this area.

Also on Friday around noon, we will be hiking to Ghost Mountain to explore the site of the Marshal South home and will also be exploring Indian ruins that South wrote about for Desert Magazine. Time permitting, we will also visit the site of a jet plane crash which is near where we will be exploring. Although, I still need a backpack to carry my daughter in.

Welcome John...I have enjoyed reading your trip reports on your blog, you guys get out to some great 4WD areas.

The plane wreckage and indian "ruins" in that area are pretty cool, plane debris can be found in several locations. One story I heard was one of the two planes crashed up on the hillside and then the gov dragged it down into the wash and buried it. At one location you can still find a shovel tossed into juniper tree that was used to try and uncover the wreckage.

Welcome to the forum John,

Nice pictures. Funny I have never been out the Pumpkin Patch. Would like to check that out sometime.
Also enjoy the Goat Canyon area and have hiked out there with Daren a bit.

Checked out your trip report. Pretty cool that someone took a Subaru Outback out there.
have kind of wondered how those would do.

Time to gear up for another desert season.

Welcome John! I enjoyed your trip report, quite the adventure. Seeing the Subaru pulled out of the mud was fun. This is a great forum, I've learned a lot from folks here.

Thanks for posting smile
Nice pic of fonts point! That Jeep trail to the Calcite Mine is pretty hairy in some spots with STEEP drop offs, ruts, and minimal turn arounds. I have hiked it a few times before realizing it is better to hike through the slot canyons. It takes some cajones to make the run, which sounds like you have a pair.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Another plane crash site I've heard about is a ways past the end of Stag Cove Wash, off Highway 78 I believe. I also still need to check out the cattleman shack in Rockhouse Canyon. Lookin' forward to desert season and cooler weather!

Welcome fellow wrangler (mine is a '97 TJ) and good on you for starting your daughter camping at a young age. I started my oldest at 3 months (snow camping in a tent) and my youngest at 2 weeks (beach camping in the sand). Nothing like teaching them the joys of dirt early. Both my girls still love it now (21 and 23 years old). Looks like you know some good spots to camp. I also like the yellow post sites. A little bit of comfort but no neighbors. I checked out your blog, very nice job!

Great trip you took everyone on. Is that a Subaru Forester in your group? How did it do on the Calcite Mine road?
