Headed out to Dos Cabezas to hike the railroad tracks, tried to access Dos Cabezas off S-2, but the wind farm project was bustling like crazy, with trucks running all over the place. I tuck tailed and ran to the next wash
Decided to take Mortero Wash instead...was a bit rusty on my 4x4ing, as I had a lot of "sway" going on with the rig. It was also nice taking the bypass passed Dos Cabezas Mine and not having to get too crazy. Tom and Daren...Thanks for the headsup Nice pic of Carrizo Mountain camp for the next 2 nights I think the meteor shower was a bit of a bust!!! saw 3... not sure if I was looking in the right place, but I did not get much sleep waiting, and waiting, and waiting... headed out on the tracks (please don't report me) I noticed quad tracks going all the way up the railroad. Do they patrol the tracks on quad? sombrero peak in the background
Carrizo Palms
was a bit windy on saturday and blew like crazy on Sat. Night! at times I though the truck was going to be blown over!
It was a great first trip of the season! Kids want to check out the Goat canyon trestle for next time and probably will do a backpack trip with them to it, through mortero palms. edited by anutami on 10/22/2012 edited by anutami on 11/29/2012

Looks like a very fun trip for the kids (and grownups!). I have fond memories of encountering a tarantula along those tracks at sundown. See any bats out there? It might be a little late in the year for them, but I recall one summer seeing them emerge from one of the tunnels. Must be roosting sites in them.

Looks like a great trip. We have hiked that way many times and there is lots to see along the tracks, especially for the little one's.
Great above shot of the Carrizo Palms. There is a great hike up the East Fork of Carrizo Gorge that will take you to the Carrizo Palms.
Bummer on the wind farm. We are heading out next weekend and I am not looking forward to driving by that ridiculous project. edited by surfponto on 10/22/2012

I think you got a great shot of Orion even if you didn't see any meteors! I did see many meteors on Thu/Fri/Sat from Rockhouse Valley but not on Sunday.
I think it is great your kids are there checking out the tunnels, they are so much fun!

Looks like you guys had a blast out there! I've hiked out there a few times too. I usually head up and over Montero Palms to Goat Canyon then head back along the railroad tracks. Back in the 80's I remember my dad used to actually drive this old Bronco along those tracks to where one of the tunnels had collapsed. Good times!

Well third attempt to post
Anutum,
If I may suggest, look into a set of air bags for your rear axle, your truck has very stiff suspension as is, but your overloads do not engage until you are already tilting, air bags will stop this. You can order online and install yourself as I did or have them installed. I usually put in 35 to 40 pounds (camper on) with an air chuck, they also have an auto system with a pump, costs more though. I installed on my Ford 7.3 Turbo 12 years ago, never regretted it.
On swaying when camped, I will drop two of my camper struts if it is bad enough where I cannot sleep, I see you have auto struts, lucky you, I went for cheaper version "hand cranks"
Your photos are wonderfull, looks like you made it to tunnel 11
Hope this helps

Thanks so much! I always thought air bags would raise my truck bed and put the camper at a higher center of gravity creating more sway. Looks like you have had many years experience and now I have another project on the list.

Thats no iphone! I took that with my canon 20D. It was my first attempt at star photos. I didn't really know what I was doing just trying a bunch of things in manual mode.

Please I am sure I was not doing things correctly, you site is very interesting as evidenced by my persistence. Especially enjoy the photos and reports on places I have not been in a very long time, want to go back.
Thank you for your welcome
