Decided to head out to the East Fork of Carrizo Creek
Very Cool sheltered and secluded campsite for the weekend!
Didn't see anybody all weekend long
many dryfalls you will need to navigate through
any plenty of open space to roam free
there are even some small sand dunes
anybody missing these? we also found 4 backpacks
and one huge mylar baloon! This would have been great for the float...maybe next year
Hike up the canyon to the carrizo palms was a bit much for us, we were shade hopping the whole time and the soft sand and direct sunlight and no wind turned us around about 3/4 of the way...hopefully next time we will get there when it cools down some more.
I think we need to invest in some sombreros
the different rock formations up the east fork are amazing
and some make great resting spots too
bought a cheap spotting scope and was able to take a picture through the eye piece with my iphone saturday morning
It was another great trip and great weekend getaway with the fam

The spotting scope picture is way cool....
There seem to be millions of footprints in the sand where you guys hiked, maybe recent groups of hikers?
I really like you getting your kids out there, they seem to enjoy the desert (and your cozy camper)....
What were the temps this weekend? No campfires or S'Mores?

With the number of abandoned backpacks I think there may be illegals in the area. A lot of the footprints were animal tracks as well. Coyote and bighorn sheep prints. There was a small water hole at the end of the canyon they are drawn to. It was dug out by some kind of animal...thinking it was bighorn.
I was hoping saturday would be cooler than it was. It was mid to high 80's in the sun and in the shade was in the 70's really nice. With not much wind it felt warmer than it was. It was in the 60's at night still a bit warm for a fire. Tons of bugs! We stopped in blair valley for lunch today and with the wind blowing it was nice!

Nice pics and report. Made it up to Carrizo Palms in Februrary 2009 via the East Fork. Was under 4 miles to the southern Carrizo Palms. The northern Carrizo Palms doesn't seem to exist except on the topo map. Found running water and some nice pools, but maybe dried up this time of year. Also, found this guy's remains. Thanks. Tom

Nice report and pictures! Its good seeing folks taking their kids out there. Another generation growing up to appreciate and share a love of the desert.

Great post. Love that hike.
We have also found many backpacks, clothing etc. there.
A few years back we also stumbled upon a Mexican blanket inside a small cave that had something the size of a basketball in it.
Noone was brave enough to unwrap it to see what it was. 
Looks like your big camper had no trouble getting up into Carrizo Gorge. Seems certain times of year the sand gets pretty soft.

Actually I think we saw the northern palm grove from up on the trestle a couple weeks back.
It looked that if you forked right from the turnoff to the southern Carrizo Palms you would run right into it.
Will try to look on Google Earth to pinpoint it.
Here you go (red arrow) although I am not sure that is North of the Carrizo Palms

I took it out of 4wd when heading up the east fork and ended up burrying my rear wheels. As soon as I put it back in 4wd I climbed right out.

Wow! Nice Bighorn find! What do you do when you find a skull like that? Leave it where you find it? Report it to the rangers? Pack it out?

Nice trip report! Great experiences for the kids.
Let's leave any bighorn skulls where we find 'em, so that the next person can also say WOW! Let's remove the backpacks and mylar balloons!

Wow! Nice Bighorn find! What do you do when you find a skull like that? Leave it where you find it? Report it to the rangers? Pack it out?
I'm hoping it's still there and you'll find it on your next trip out there! Distinctly remember the girlfriend asking why the skeleton ended up next to the watering hole and wondering how she could have missed every episode of Marlin Perkins' Wild Kingdom Didn't see a a radio collar nearby. Tom

Yeah, the topo map looks a little funny because the "southern" Carrizo Palms have a little circle on both the right and left side of the name which is confusing as to which canyon the palms actually are in. Looks like they are in both. The topo map shows the "northern" palms to be in the East Fork at the very top edge of your picture. Went back to the oldest sat photos (1994) on Google Earth and still don't see any palms there. Maybe that grove died out. Tom
