The Goat Canyon Trestle is an engineering marvel on the “impossible” San Diego and Arizona Railway that was constructed between 1907 and 1919 along the rugged Carrizo Gorge. The world's largest wooden trestle was built in 1932 after an earthquake destroyed one of the tunnels, forcing the railroad engineers to bridge Goat Canyon. This spectacular trestle remains to this day for adventure minded people to find deep within a rugged wilderness.

Looks like a great a trip, the powder cans look like they are almost all gone. I remember seeing 4WD cars on the tracks on a trip out with Bob and his wife.

You are right, they are all gone. Do you attribute that to flash flooding or souvenir hunters?

Great trip and some nice tough terrain. Some water in the morteros too! Hiking up Mortero Palms Canyon to the overlook at Goat Canyon earlier this year makes we want to bring the big pack up there and camp somewhere near Jacumba Peak.

I have been wanting to do that as well...let me know if you want any company.

Yeah, I was out at the old rail road workers camp a few years ago and built up that part of the wall again with a few of the cans laying nearby. I don't know if they're getting blown away or if someone messed with it.
No railroad police. Although, my buddy does know one of them and says if you're cool with them and chat for a bit they won't write you up for walking along the tracks. But don't take my word for it. edited by BorregoWrangler on 12/22/2013
