Spent Monday and Tuesday nights (4/7 and 4/8) camping in Carrizo Valley in the southern Anza-Borrego desert. Didn't do a whole lot of anything exciting. Mostly just enjoyed the solitude and quiet in my favorite place in the world. Poked around Indian Gorge a bit, Bow Willow (only one site occupied), Egg Mtn, Canyon Sin Nombre, etc. S2 was quiet with very little traffic. The little store at Agua Caliente was closed on Tuesday. No ice, warm beer, oh well. Warm beer is better than no beer. A couple of Marines helicopters flew over my campsite Tuesday evening. I waved and they waved back. Drove home Wednesday via EC085 on the east side of Fish Creek mtns. First time i've been on EC085. Very soft and deep silt in a couple of places. Climbed up to the WHIT (1941) benchmark and signed the logbook next to Tom Teske.

I'm wondering if anyone in the group has any idea what this is "dust experiment" about ... https://www.flickr.com/photos/fboyd/13769687813/

Florian it looked like a good trip and I especially like the Bombing Range picture. I was curious of course about the Dust Experiment devices so I did some Google Sleuthing. I didn't expect to find anything as they sure do look like some cheesy practical joke.

However.... they appear to be legitimate:

Although, "made out of bundt cake pans" didn't turn anything upwink

I guess we can add "Aeolian Marble Dust Collector" to the Things Found in the Desert list.

Thanks again for sharing.

Nice jet photo...smile
Never seen the marble dust collectors, was that actually in ABDSP or BLM?
Vallecitos has a direct line of sight with communications on Mt Laguna so you can get cell reception all through out the valley there.

Florian,

The butterfield ranch resort has a store just up the road from agua caliente and I am pretty sure they sell ice too. http://www.campingfriend.com/ButterfieldRanch/?source=wildernet, sorry you had to drink warm beer, but like you said it is better than no beer!

I have shopped at the Butterfield store many times, they have block and crushed ice at reasonable prices and some IPA's as well. For $5 you can park in their lot and they will give you a map to explore the Cottonwood Cyn area.

Andy, thanks for doing the research on the dust collectors. The collectors i found were a bit on the low-tech side. And Daren, they were in the state park on south side of the road into Indian Gorge.

Nolan, Butterfield Ranch is closed Tues and Wed. I thought about driving up to Stagecoach Trails in Shelter Valley or out to Ocotillo but really didn't want to spoil my solitude by driving to civilization. smile

Another great trip out in the desert, Florian. Your jet photo reminds me of one I "took" while out in Superstition photographing the Blue Angels a few days after getting my new Tundra in 2009 (it most certainly doesn't look like this now!). Was amazed to see a photo of the month winner in Nat Geo with the Blue Angels in the background of some guy's dog pic looking equally as fake as mine. Lots of readers called them on that one. Tom
