Has anyone been following the Tamarisk removal at the Carrizo Marsh? 200 acres to be removed with environmental mitigation money from the Ocotillo wind generators.

The park has closed the area so its hard to see whats going on. They burned 50 acres last October and have been running a bulldozer all winter. I hope they don't close it forever like they did the Carrizo Impact Area. They did a good job removing the Tamarisk in Carrizo Gorge. There are many thousands of Smoke Trees sprouting there.

Not sure what area you are referring to that is closed. There is tamarisk removal efforts and stage station rebuilding efforts in progress. They have been working on Carrizo Gorge for a couple of years now, it is pretty cleared out.
I think the CIA is closed for obvious reasons not related to tamarisk.

It,s not closed for obvious reasons. The navy cleaned it up and returned it to the park. Then some idiot was digging for scrap metal and got hurt. In the 30's, citizens donated money to buy that area for the park, then the Navy "borrowed" it for the war effort. It is as safe as anywhere and it is the most beautiful part of the park. Funny story; The Crawfords of inner pasture, found a tank and took off the top. The drove that thing around in the 50's and 60's.

The marsh is closed by order of Kathy Dice, 1 mile east of the Vallecito/Canyon Sin Nombre jct. No word on when it will reopen. I'll check it out next week.

They have to close it for that obvious reason combined with today's litigation crazy society. It is definitely one of the most beautiful parts of the desert and I personally hope to see open again some day.

It's definitely closed. Last time I was out there I walked around to the south of the area ( http://www.anzaborrego.net/anzaborrego/forum/topic948-carrizo-badlands.aspx ) and lots of tamarisks had been cut down with some burns already completed. Looked nothing like before. Hopefully it can be restored to something close to its pre Tropical Storm Kathleen state.

Seems it has no immediate re-open date. It will remain closed to public access for the duration of tamarisk removal and habitat restoration.

Me digging up old posts again...we did work on the machine that was shredding tamarisk in carrizo gorge, which is how I originally heard about it. Didn't seem like a good idea based on my experience and research. Salt Cedar is very tough and must be burnt and the seed beds and sprouts, etc. burned every year for 3-4 years to eradicate. Simply grinding them up makes it worse and now seems to be the case in CG. The marsh, I have not recently been to but think/hope it has been more successful due to the burning method.

Was out there a couple years ago, the sign was up but the orange barrier was gone. We parked and read the sign and were just standing there when we got buzzed by the ranger in a Cesna. Told us over loud speaker that it's closed and to move-along.

Did the crews ever get past the Coyote Spike Camp section? Seemed like they stopped there.
