Hi all I am thinking of visiting the parking for some hiking and camping this week ( April 20). I live in SF and I'm flying to San Diego. The weather shows it's 94 degrees! Should I not be thinking about this?!! We like to camp in remote places- perhaps not designated sites. Are there any places you could recommend with some shade and good hikes around? We will have a 4 wheel drive. Are there some higher elevations which might be cooler? I would also welcome other recommendations for primitive camping near San Diego. Thank you!

Culp Valley and Shelter Valley (Earthquake / Blair / Little Blair Valley) will be cooler due to their higher altitudes and some (legal) offroad opportunities exist as well as plenty of primitive camping and hiking.

Be careful, it is definitely rattlesnake season right now and let us know how your trip turns out.

Came here to recommend Culp Valley as well. Temps are usually 10-15 degrees cooler than Borrego Springs. Grapevine Canyon is a fun easy offroad trail you could take down to the 78 where you could find some more hiking. Be careful with the heat and bring plenty of water.
There is also Rodriguez and Orriflame canyon if you wanted to not be in a campground - but you have to be careful where you camp as there is a lot of private land up there.
