Went out last weekend to cache some water for a backpack trip next week. We needed to get some water out in Harper Flat so I drove up Pinyon Wash to hike in from the end of the wash. There really wasn't much of a road anymore, the flash floods have removed all traces of the road. I basically drove in on what seemed like the likely route and as close to what my GPS was telling me should be the road. It was a great day out, not too hot and we didn't see anybody else out there.
I only took my Olympus OM-2S with me and some really, really old super expired Kodak UC 400 film. The photos came out kinda kooky for sure, guess film does go bad. I have more photos from the trip on another roll still in my camera so there will be a part II to this post once I get that roll developed. All of these photos are straight from the lab, I didn't mess around with any of them.
Moon rise, you can see the "road"
I wanted to do some star trail shots but the really bright full moon sorta spoiled that idea. I did manage to get one long exposure in.
Looking back at the "road" during the early morning light
Great shot of Sunset Mtn.....

I like how the old film gives your right front tire a nice whitewall look

Big hike planned? Are you doing the route from over off split mountain road?

The film gives your photos a "vintage" look. Pretty cool.

We are headed out also... Still debating Nolina Wash and hike to Harper Flat or Dave Mccain Spring and hike to unnamed valley (above harper flat to the east) edited by anutami on 10/29/2013

@Nolan: We will look for you. We will be coming down near Split Rock and heading up towards Dave McCain.
We have enough water cached for another person to come along so if anybody would like to join us let me know.

A few more photos from the trip out....
Heading out into Harper Flat, Sunset Mtn just visible on the right side. We are heading back towards Pinyon Wash.
Panorama of Harper Flat looking South/South West. The polarizer seems to make some heavy vignetting on some photos, need to figure that out.
Lots and lots of butterflies on fresh scat

I see those 'California Patch' butterflies are still converging on scats as they were weeks ago when I saw thousands of them during the course of the day. We thought they might be attracted to the moisture in the scats, but after a short hiking break, we had another theory. One of our party had hiking poles with cork handles. When she put down the hiking poles, the butterflies converged on the handles in masses, similar to the scat behavior. The cork handles were not wet, so we were thinking maybe it was salt from her sweat they were after.

They were also aggressively congregating on the human urine patches we left...they were everywhere...!
