I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but did find this pic online. Word is the dropoff has been graded and the rocks removed from the area below.

I would be curious to hear a first hand account, last time I was there (Dec 2012) it was pretty messed up.

Yeah, when I was over there in early fall it was torn up almost to the point of impassible. I'm headed out this week and will certainly grab some pictures of my own.

Confirmed with own eyes, most of all of Fish Creek has had the tractor go thru and grade the roads except the north fork. Probably any high clearance vehicle could make it to Split Rock. An experienced driver could probably drive my big truck up/down the drop off right now, very soft silty dirt though. Hardly a bump or boulder the entire way from the drop off to the main Fish Creek road. You can see my footprints on the road cuz I am to chicken to try and drive it....

How about the narrow rocky section when you turn off Fish Creek and head toward going up the drop off? Graded? Also, are both sections of the drop off graded? Upper and lower? Last time I went up, the lower part was much more difficult than the upper part.

All graded, clear from the main FC road to the top....for now...my 3rd picture shows the lower section, completely void of the 5' holes it had before...

Not really that sad they graded that route. Spent about two hours driving the half mile through that area when it was 100 degrees at midnight and when my pickup had only about two small scratches. Bent the driver's door and scratched both sides of my bumper making it through there. Tom

That is crazy it is now graded. We did it years ago in our FJ40 Land Cruiser (think jeep style). My wife got out of the car and wouldn't ride shot gun. Will have to go check it out and see if she will stay in the car this time.
Here is the section with the Squeeze

If you did the squeeze and Pinyon drop off, Diablo will bore you. Pinyon is way worse. That's a great shot at the squeeze. Tom

I was at hapapa flat in early December and we passed a small tracked excavator parked just off the road west of fish creek before dave mccain spring turnoff. I noticed that they had also moved rocks in the wash to limit vehicles to a single route through the upper canyon from before sandstone to hapapa flat. I believe it is necessary evil so that the rangers can access the areas. We didn't go in to sandstone to see if they had cleared the easter quake landslide or to pinyon dropoff . I talked to a ranger who said they were going to block off the illegal wide entries to pinyon and make one path don't know if they did it on this trip.

Speaking of the squeeze, just got my lift done on my 2015 Tacoma and was wondering if anyone knows if the new Tacomas will make it through there? My old 2000 Tacoma did with no problems.

The Pinyon Mtn Rd is closed before it gets to the Squeeze, you can't drive thru there anymore.

You can't drive the squeeze anymore? why? wow this is the first I've heard of that. Why did they close it?
so I guess the only way to get to split mountain now is from ocotillo wells route? or? edited by sddarkman619 on 8/8/2015

You can get to Split Mtn via Fish Creek / Ocotillo Wells road near the quarry.

There's always my favorite route to Split Mt Rd/Fish Creek, EC085. It's a lot more interesting than 78. If you're looking for another entrance to Fish Creek, don't forget Seco del Diablo to Diablo Dropoff. edited by tommy750 on 8/8/2015

So I guess I had my roads mixed up...didn't realize the Pinyon Mtn forked off to the squeeze so yes, it looks like it is open. Thanks sdarkman619 for correcting me and letting us know, I may try and squeeze my truck thru it soon....

I'm heading out to diablo dropoff to get to split mtn on sunday. someone put a bunch of toys animals in some of the wind holes there and we(my two little girls and I) are going to go out and clean them out of there. Girls are stoked to get the toys but the desert shouldn't be littered like that, even if it was a cute idea. Welcome to go along if you'd like. try to get to badland overlook to meet a friend by 9am. See image, and if anyone can tell me how to resize, the BB Code isn't working.

Well, that sucks. I'm running out there on Sat with some guys that have never been there and was planning on getting some good "pucker factor" out of the second drop and the subsequent 200yds of canyon. Is loop wash graded too? I remember it being a little rough years back. I'll post this on the upcoming trips too but we're going to run 11/7 8A North County Fair - Banner - Rodriguez Cyn - Arroyo Tapiado area - Drop Off - Wind Caves - the Slot/Cut Across area - Fonts Pt - Lower Willows. Only tough spots are optional so far are the rock gardens in Rodriguez Cyn.

Is there a sticky about how to post photos? I've got a cool shot of coming out of the narrows right as is really gets into Fish Creek below the drop off and I'm wondering what happened to this sign.... Wait. got it.
This was from 2010 when the Cruiser was little but I think this sign disappeared the next time I went through there. Anyways, is this graded too? Sounds like yes if it's graded everywhere up (SW) of there. edited by mattherrington on 11/5/2015 edited by surfponto on 11/5/2015

Broken shaft gulch is the area after the 2nd part of diablo drop off if I am correct. It' may have been graded at one time but it's not flat. there's still rocks and obstacles down there. and if it was graded it was with a narrow blade.

yeah I didn't see this before until my friend showed me the picture. When I saw it in person I was sort of miffed that someone would do that. Funny thing, I forgot I was afraid of heights and went climbing up there and got myself on a ledge and froze. Had to take the long way down. Was crazy but it's clean now except for 1 pony.

Nice! thanks for the clean up, Just hope your kids didn't get bummed out when you tossed em in the trash. I kind of enjoy seeing all those shoes just before scissors crossing, but they probably need to be cleaned up as well. Never understood the thrill of taking a pair of shoes with the laces tied together and throwing them over a branch or telephone wire.

They each kept 1 toy, a stuffed snake and a brown bear. the rest was donated(that were salvageable) to children without toys. edited by sddarkman619 on 11/9/2015
