I love that area, Tom and I have been at the base of Pepperwood like a million times but never scrambled up. You should have looked closer at that radio thing to see what it was, most likely BP but not sure what for but would not doubt crossers at all. We have run into folks on the path out there at least 3 times now. That rutted section only lasts a few hundred feet, usually you can straddle it and get past if you have some ground clearance. |

Weight - Somewhere around 60-70lbs probably Top Speed - Flat, no wind, wearing my 8lb hiking boots, in a tuck and using the 4.5" slick tires inflated to 30psi.....close to 30mph Range - Off Road 25-30 miles, on road about 35-40 miles
I run the off road tires tubeless and 7 psi in the back and 5 psi in the front. The slicks I run with tubes and about 25psi front and 30 rear.
Motor kit is a BBSHD from Luna Cycle
Battery pack is a 52volt and about 15 amp made from laptop batteries I harvested from computers at work that were headed for the recycle farm.
If you look thru the pictures you can see 4.5" slicks for the road and the 4" knobbies for off road.
The racks I bought on Amazon and made custom mounts for them
The custom triangle bag is made from 500D Cordura in Pencott Badlands camo (need to make the saddle bags still)
I have around 200 miles on the motor build version.
What else..?

Are there any new visitor guidelines? Yes, please see below:- Stay Local: Stay close to home. Walk or bike into the park. Parking is very limited. Do not take road trips to parks and beaches or to neighboring states.
- Stay Active: Keep walking, jogging, hiking and biking. Watch for one-way trails.
- Stay Safer at 6 Feet: Maintain a physical distance of 6 feet or more. Gatherings, picnics and parties are not allowed. Visitors will be asked to leave if there are too many people at the park, beach or on trails to allow for the required physical distance.
- Stay Clean: Be prepared. Bring soap/sanitizer and pack out all trash.
- Stay Covered: wear a face covering whenever you are within six feet of another person who is not a member of your family or household.
Thank you for your patience and continued support of California State Parks as we work to limit your risk for exposure to COVID-19 in the outdoors. For more information, please visit parks.ca.gov/FlattenTheCurve. edited by dsefcik on 6/4/2020 |

Really, just head out towards the base of the 'Rosa mtns and you should run into ducked trails and the route up Alder/Nicolias via the wash will also work. The mud caves are fun and need several trips out to really see most of everything. On busy weekends there are groups of people everywhere and you will see where all of the entrances are, many are so small and hidden they are hard to find even if you know where they are. In Schad's book he advises not to walk on top of the caves as they are subject to collapsing down. Tragically this happened back in 2012 to a young man named Guillermo Pino so folks should use caution when exploring the caves. |

Gary and I took the finger to the right in this photo and then stayed way right to come down almost straight in line with the trucks parked at Butler junction. So that's how you beat me back to the car! When I looked at google earth after I got home I could see that would have been a better route than what I did. I saw some cairns leading down toward the deep canyon and followed them. It was a wild ride.
Here is the route we took down:

There were probably better ways to descend the ridge I was on, but I started seeing cairns, so I figured at least someone had done my route before. Unfortunately there are too many misc cairns out there, many of them only indicate someone else has gone that direction *at least once*. While they can be helpful in many routes I would not suggest following them if they do not seem like they are taking you in the right direction. One of the things I like about the desert is you can generally just head the direction you want to go and find a route. |

Interesting seeing the other hikers out there. Actually kinda nice if your soloing. Gary and I were out there from Thurs-Thurs that week and we only saw a single hiker on day 1 that was coming back from the lower rock houses. I looked out into the valley every day and never saw anyone, even at the top of the santa rosa ridgeline, I am surprised someone saw our packs. There were a lot of footprints in the main wash to the cottonwoods via the dry fall...many footprints. |

Thursday april 1, completed 3rd crossing, box canyon, hidden spring, santa rosa, nicholias loop. Went down nicholias. Done this loop twice before. I am not quite visualizing your loop, can you share more info or a map? You started at 3rd crossing, went over box to hidden spring, up to stiffereno, over to nicholias, down dry fall, back down rhc to hidden spring and then back over to box/3rd crossing? |

Very nice. All I saw there was thick mud. Is this further up the area or did the grass get cut?
If you walk 20-30' up cyn from the main hole in the ground there is a bunch of grass and there is a small water hole that had some water in it. |

I have been told to put moth balls or Irish Spring bar soap in your engine compartment when you park.
That was back in the 80's. I've been using peppermint oil ever since then. Please elaborate, rodent urine, feces and cute little foot prints in the engine bay are a problem at some parking locations. |

Is the beginning of your route the same trail that would be used for the Barton Canyon approach to Rabbit?
Yes, I parked my car almost in the same spot for the Rabbit summit day hike. We were able to get a little closer due to an unlocked gate at the time. Just make sure you find the old Native American trail from the ancient shore line towards Barton canyon. It will save a lot of time and effort.
Do you have a gpx of old native route? Would it be similar to this?

Yeah, the site seems to time out quickly. I will usually type up a long TR as temp text document first then copy/paste into the website when ready. Lots of great pics on this (combined) TR.

Great pics. I have a second edition of Schad's book that describes a hike down the length of the gorge. It's not in later editions. My first desert hike was 30 years ago and I wanted to see the trestlen. I somehow managed to buy all of his books from the first and the Carrizo Gorge trip always had me wanting to go explore it. There is only a small section of the gorge I have not had boots on the ground in, a small section near tunnel #5 that has always looked too brushy but I suspect it could be done. I have gotten tons of ticks down in the gorge and even on this trip we stayed out of the botom and both Gary and I got the brown tick variety just following bypass roads. |

Any running water left in the bottom with the lack of rain this year?
Great question, I totally forgot, yes...we did get water at the palms. A small 12" round surface puddle filled with palm frond debris and a 3' diamondback snake...we shooed the snake away and pumped about 10 liters of the absolutely worst water I have ever had! If you have ever had to clean the drains in your house, that black thick goop that comes out on the drain snake is what our filtered water smelled like...I could only use it for cooking water. Gary said it was the sulphur and that it would help with "staying regular"....
With the fire in the Canadian railcar I suspect that patrols will now increase and fines will be enforced. We did run into a RR patrol with 6 people in the vehicle and they let everyone on the tracks know they were trespassing but no tickets were issued.
It was good trip and it felt good to be back out in the gorge. There were 2 locked gates we ran into, one at tunnel #8 and at tunnel #20. Tunnel #16 is caved in with a small opening to crawl thru but we took the bypass road for most of the tunnels and also followed the the old road over the east side between tunnels #16-#20 before dropping down to the palms. We saw a few snakes, diamondback, rosy boa, etc, vultures, ravens, whirlybirds but no moving 4 legged creatures.
