Thanks for the Yuha Man link. Interesting story. The bones disappeared and have never been found. However, a few tiny fragments were recovered and dated to a later time. A hearth dated to 9000 BP was uncovered a few years back near Jacumba so aboriginals have been around the Colorado Desert for some time.

Seems like a shame to lose what they uncovered.

I'm guessing the first snake was a Western Diamondback and the second was a Sidewinder but I though that bird was a burrowing owl so... Not really sure how to tell a Western from a Red since the Western can kind of look a little reddish I hear. Any thoughts?

Didn't get any ticks but it was really windy when I got into brush if that matters.

I'm no expert on them snakes but the first one looks like a red. The second one did it have horns on its face? The scorpion shot is terrific!

Yes, I almost always use one pole. An exception would be a hike that's all trail, but that doesn't happen very often. Knees were still sore for a while after the descent.

When I was coming down from my failed attempt of Gasp, I was in a steep downward hill. I had a 2 foot drop so I dropped my pole down to steady myself so I could leap down. The hill under my pole gave way and I flipped over and skidded down on my pack for about 10 ft. Ended up in a comfortable position and did a prayer that it didn't break anything. Wonder if theres any other opps on trek poles out there.

Put about 150 miles plus on the desert this year. Seen a lot of animals but no Bighorn. Has anyone seen any this year? This weekend went out in the Jeep did 3 separate 2 milers each, just checking out next year prospects. Was in the mid to high 90's.. Did find a spring. Looks like it was used for by some ranchers at some time. The grass was green around it but I didn't dig around to confirm water.

Nice pictures of the red. They are great posers. Got bit by a western when I was about 5 years old up at a park in Palomar. Playing in some rocks. Got me on the hand. Was an ugly 5 days afterward. Reds are pretty common in the desert where the westerns are not so common more along the coastal plains. The horned vipers more uncommon and plain ole vicious. . They will chase you. Going to hit Table mountain on the east side this week to see if I can stir up some wildlife and such.

Did a short hike. Dropped down to Devils Canyon, followed it up to its origin. Followed the south side of Jacumba Mountain until the mesa dropped away. We have been hacking out a trail down to Monterol Plalms. We got within 1.5 miles of our gps marker on the upper south side of Montero. If wasn't for the late start we would have gone down to the small valley.
Exiting Devils canyon
Devils canyon starts here.
End of Mesa north side, before dropping down. Theres another small valley below about 1/2 mile.
View of small valley below. Next year I'll hit the valley and go over the ridge to the west. Should put be close to the gps marker.
We followed the ridge of east mesa for a while , then zig-zagged back. Only about 5 miles, temps were in the mid 70's slight breeze .

Devils doesn't lead to Montero, it though starts in the east mesa area of Table Mountain. I didnt spend as much time as I wanted to this season in this area. Got sidetracked with some hikes in the Carrizo creek area thanks to some of Tommy's posts. Heres a google cut out. The peak in the center is Jacumba. The white track is what I need to complete. Britain, The last photo. I parked in the farmers field below. I have a old "trail head" vehicle I use just in case. In all the years I never had a problem. I parked in an organic lemon field and the smell was glorious, especially upon my return. There are quite a few "old trials" criss crossing the Santa Rosas in areas of low erosion. They are a blessing when I find them. Especially when you are lugging heavy gear + water.
Cheers

I've been following the plaque for near 20 years. Used to have a plaster lighthouse next to it. People would pay their tokens, most likely ended up a geocache. About 5 years ago the weekend warriors found it and destroyed the lighthouse and tried prying off the plaque. It was still there this year a bit more destroyed.
There used to be some black rock designs in the earth above it and a ways away. Spirals and a sun with rays. Those also have been destroyed by weekend wheelers.

I do not know your experience or capabilities, especially in the desert...in the summer...however for most folks, venturing out 8+ miles for a backpack trip into the desert in the summer with 105+ temps and relying on a water source to provide is a risk for anyone of any skill or knowledge level. When we head out for trips where water sources may be suspect we always, always bring enough to get us in to the first source and back in case it is dry. That may demand carrying 8 liters the first day.

This. I've lived in Imperial Valley for a long time. Used to do hikes in the heat mostly for photo ops around active springs. Like scuba diving I never went alone. It also pays to look at the weather temps for those hikes. I used to also carry an umbrella on my pack. This weeks temps not hot but dangerously hot.

Any hurt yourself out hiking?

Did a job on my ankle Thanksgiving day. 4 miles out in a bad place. Learned a few things. I couldn't feel any breaks in the leg but I do remember the foot folded up against my lower leg. Once I straighten my leg the foot popped back into place. Had my wife pull on the foot to see if was still attached and it was.

So next my next step was to rig up something. I usually carry duct tape but I took it out of the pack to use it for something else and didn't put it back. I had Ibuprofen which I quickly took about 600mg. I do carry a first aid kit so I looked into is another joke. Well, I did manage to get up and could lightly stand on the damaged leg. I limped for about a mile to the first rock pile. I told my wife "thats all folks" she should now hike out and try and get some help. Well the Ibuprofen started to work after an hour or so so I headed out. Knowing my wife she would need to follow how we got in to show anybody where I was so I would stay the route.

3 miles and 5 hrs later the wife is coming back. 911 wasn't answering. Well 4 miles back to the rig and 7 hrs to get out. X-rays show multiple broken bones and fractures. Sort of made me sick looking at them.

I will now fix the first aid kit to include this type of fun. Its put the boo into me but I'm sure once I'm good to go I wont act my age again and be out where I shouldnt be.

Never go to urgent care its a joke, Thanksgiving time at the hospital in EL Centro will be a long wait. Plenty of Sand People and Plaster City people worse off than I was. Then mix in the locals. Full house folks. Well, I'm splinted up plenty of pain meds. I need to wait until Monday to get pinned back together.

Stay safe people.

It is something I often worry about. Worst injuries so far are over use injuries, cuts, scrapes, minor tweaks, and bruises. Most minor injuries caused by some combo of bushwhacking, cacti, loose terrain, steep terrain, minor falls, and rocks rolling underfoot.

I let people at home know where I am going and when I will be back, plus carry an InReach. I always have a down jacket in case of an unplanned night out.

Yes, many people asked if I had Inreach. No, I didn't but I most likely will next time. It sort has put the boo into me but I'm sure once healed up I'll be foolhardy again smile

I usually carry a roll of duct tape. Good for if your boots come apart and other fixes. Its good at making splints if required. It was a tough 4 miles to get out, 3 dry waterfalls to boot. Lots of butt scooting! Yes, you do need to get out. If I had the tape I could have made a crutch, without the trekking poles It would have been really hard.

As we got into the middle of it, the grass formed a mosaic pattern. There was no cracked dried look with grass growing in the cracks, the grass formed the pattern..

Good to hear. Slow and steady wins the race. Hiking poles are my best friends off trail.

btw Re: Flowers. The butter flies were insane! I could smell the bugs cooking on my radiator!

Did a quick loop through Carrizo creek before the desert dragon returns. Was hot nevertheless around high 90's. The Tamarisk is coming back. Didn't see any water. Cats Claw was really thick in places.

Close up with Leckie in Background
Moved over to the other side roamed the badlands. The Lost BM is on this hill.
Hot but nice to get out.

The Tamarisk was starting to grow back last year. More this year. I didnt get to the lower Carrizo gorge area this year to see if this area started to come back. I did notice last year in Jacumba Jims the stuff was chainsawed all the way almost to the rock fall. I didn't notice after the fall if any action was done.

Star trail pretty awesome. The other looks like you captured Jupiter crossing the Milkyway.

To remove plane trails most paint programs or photo program will do. Its a simple cut copy and paste a like area into the affected one.

My cork grips gave out. The poles have been my bud for many years and miles. So I replace them.

Haha Bush whacking. I feel I should have got the wally world cheapies. The price for the new grips modifying them to fit, now most likely the lower ends will break. They probably look like they should from the rock damage..

I repaired my cork grips with epoxy and shoegoo. Soon I’ll need to do a full replace like yours. I was thinking cork tape for bike handlebars might work well.

I use aluminum trekking poles because I would shatter carbon ones. Mine are bent, paint chipped but still work. I’ve had to replace the tips due to wear and snapping them off many times. I keep spares in the car.

My replacement is not cork but some foamy rubber. They feel pretty good I don't have straps anymore. Don't use them straps anywho. I too have aluminum poles. Wives are the cheap Wally world aluminum ones with a rubber handle. I don't like the way the grips feel.

Not sure opening the gate is a good or bad thing nowadays. We hiked through the middle from the bluff on the Leckie side. Didnt go by the gate. Lots of stuff now growing in it now. A few years back it was pretty much dead. Didnt find any water just dried mud areas.

For the Condor and Coolmax, A couple questions. Hows the neck fit? I don't like tightness here. I'm tall narrow build with long arms so hows the shink once washed? I like both and my hat also has a neck flap. Thanks

Britian, my shirts came within 10 days, backorderd, so be patient.

Got the shirts in. Like them. Next question is this. I've always hiked in Jeans. They're starting to chap the inside of my legs.

Suggestions for lightweight hiking pants?
