Went out for a solo trip to see if the spring marked on the topo maps was good for getting water. Turns out not really...
This was all there was...well, and tons of catsclaw. I was hoping to find an old cattle trough and a piped spring like some other areas but no luck.
Anybody know what these guys are??
I know what this is...
OK, I knew you were gonna ask...yeah, those are from my S100 camera. Here are some fantastic photos from my 1937 Zeiss folding camera. And yes, I used really old expired Kodachrome slide film and had it cross processed as negatives.
My camp setup, it was getting dark by the time I got into Inner Pasture.
Star trails....the lens fogged up pretty quick. The air was just moist, both days I had clouds just looking like they wanted to rain on me. Probably mid 30's at night and just plain wet.
Sunrise
Self portrait
I don't even like this shot of IP
On the way home I put some Redscale film in the old camera and took some photos of the wind turbines...both me and the camera just saw red looking at them...

Nice trip. Tom I have a drawer full of old film in the refrigerator...not sure how many rolls left, maybe 20 or so. Not sure on the maps either, springs can change as the ground shifts or they can dry up completely. |

Hunting in the In-Ko-Pah Mountains

Went on a 2 day backpacking trip to hunt for pictographs in the In-Ko-Pah mountains. The night sky was perfect for star gazing, I could easily see the Andromeda Galaxy with my binoculars and shooting stars were streaking across the sky all night, especially from 3am-5am when I easily saw 3-4 per minute it seemed like. Jupiter may be one of the outer bright streaks, not sure (Olympus OM-2s, 28mm, f/5.6, Lomography 100 ISO color film) The hunt was good, we found some new pictographs on a panel I had visited before but did not see them because they are so faint. I still did not see them while photographing the "blank" boulder face but DStretch made them pop out once I got home and processed the photos. Here is a 5 image stitched photo of what looked like a blank boulder face Here is the DStretched version...it revealed two different pictographs Lets look at a couple of the individual images used to stitch everything together, they will show more detail. Here is the top section before/after
Here is the bottom section before/after
Just amazing...you simply cannot see these pictographs staring at the boulder! Here is another panel that I did not see a pictograph on, mostly because I was focused on the obvious one below it. These photos reveal another sun burst above and to the right of the obvious one.
If you have Manfred Knaak's book The Forgotten Artist: Indians of Anza-Borrego and Their Rock Art and look on page 73 you will see a panel of rock art that looks like it is in pretty good condition. He credits the Museum of Man for the photo so chances are it is from the 30's or 40's, possibly from Malcolm Rodgers. I used an old 1937 camera and old expired color film to photograph it as best I could to match, here are the results
The photo in Knaak's book looks awfully good compared to what I photographed last weekend, I wonder if the deterioration over the years is genuine or if the older photo in the book was modified somehow to represent more of what the photographer believed he/she saw. Here are a few more before/after photos of the same panel

Some of those are just impossible to see without the filters. Then from there decide which photos need more tweaking to look their best. |

Confirmed with own eyes, most of all of Fish Creek has had the tractor go thru and grade the roads except the north fork. Probably any high clearance vehicle could make it to Split Rock. An experienced driver could probably drive my big truck up/down the drop off right now, very soft silty dirt though. Hardly a bump or boulder the entire way from the drop off to the main Fish Creek road. You can see my footprints on the road cuz I am to chicken to try and drive it....

Can't say I have that happen before but it does not surprise me, it seems like the majority of people think the desert is someplace they can do whatever they want, that there are no real regulations they have to follow. Over New Years someone actually drove right into the middle of the Morteros Village site and camped out. They moved many rocks to make a campfire against a cupule/mortero boulder and basically ruined it with soot and broken edges from throwing the rocks at at. They also got the vehicle stuck and dug out a huge midden area in the process. |

Pretty much what Borregolinda stated. "Camping" can be anywhere (where there are not any signs indicating otherwise), your car though can only be one car length off the road. So in this scenario they could have parked their car one car length off the road and walked over to the "illegal" spot and camped.
As Borregolinda said, confronting people out in the desert can be problematic, it is usually better to just take indiscreet notes of license, description, etc and report to park rangers. |

For books, Schad and Lindsay...are what I have. Busy areas are easy to get to areas or close to off road areas (ocotillo wells). Fish Creek/Split Mountain is great but very busy on holidays, so is Blair Valley. Trying to compare DV to ABDSP is hard, it is apples vs oranges in so many ways, desert is probably it's only commonality. Not knowing what you want to do for a weekend it is hard to recommend a place, for general camping/hiking with family Blair Valley is good, for remote back country you could do Rockhouse Cyn or hike into Carrizo Gorge. If you stay away from the park visitor recommended areas you will probably be fine for crowds...but that depends on your idea of crowds.... |

That 4x4 van I see everywhere, assuming there not too many of them, in fact just saw it it the other day in town. Mud pots are a blast when they are going off, the whole ground vibrates. |

I felt pretty bad when I left the flat bread out for Tom's wildlife cam....yeah, generally don't recommend leaving anything out for the critters. |

I remember that photo, I thought it looked like those girly socks back in the 80's, the ones that had a little ball hanging off the back....

Cool trip David...I could probably join you on those trips now and fit thru the squeeze in my new truck! I drove it on the EC085 yesterday and plowed thru all the silty sand with ease. Joel, one of the older guys I have backpacked with told a story of one night he woke up and a kit fix had his sleeping bag in his mouth and was trying to drag it and him away...pretty funny. |

I am the Lands Supervisor for the California Department of Fish and Wildife. The Department owns and manages Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve. This reserve is currently closed to the public (though in the future we hope to open up portions of the property). Violators can be cited by Department Wardens. We are currently in the process of updating the Department website to reflect this. It will be hard believe much from an anonymous poster so please provide some credible proof. I think most people on this forum respect the lands right use. |

Ocotillo Blooms in Feb?

I was able to get out last Monday for field day to Split Mountain and noticed on the way home driving that almost all of the ocotillos were blooming bright red buds. I was wondering if the funky warm weather was making them think it was spring a little early. Has anybody else notice this recently? |

You can check the CDFW Lands Staff Directory below but I don't see "Lands Supervisor" on the list. Maybe the dept. website is being updated to reflect this as well?
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/directory.html I have already emailed the Lands Program Manager for confirmation, we will see if there is a response. |

$60 for 4 people? That is a good price for cabin "camping".....and it keeps the kit foxes from stealing your shoes..... |

That pottery is a companion piece to the one we discussed via email. Always love an Orion shot, nice work, doesn't the Nex have some kind of remote shutter mechanism? Anyway, one my favorite areas for sure, thanks for posting. |

There was a log book entry in the Coyote mtn register that said they hiked up from what look like "E & Ch pass". Anyone have an idea what/where E & Ch pass is? I know people come up from Alcoholic Pass and also from the Pegleg monument. Can't figure out what E & Ch means. Maybe i just didn't correctly read the register entry.
-Florian Interesting...looks like we need to do some digging to figure that one out.... |
