The railway getting more money dumped into it and re-opened again?

Nice TR, Daren. Was wondering how you guys were going to manage your water with 90+ degree heat. Time for an activated charcoal filter downstream from the Sawyer. Had the charcoal filter in the pack, just too lazy to hook it up..next time for sure..!! I could only carry 8 liters to start with, Gary took 11....one of the RR patrol people gave me 2 liters of bottled water, ultimately 12 liters was needed for each of us for the 2-3/4 days we were out. I was mostly counting on water at the palms which there was...barely...and the 2 liters from the RR person was great, it was hot out. |

Nice TR. Couple of questions. How do you deal with ants when cowboy camping? Is Gary hauling a bear cannister or is that an old paint can to store food in? Never had an issue with ants, they just go around I guess. Old paint can, Gary says it keeps the ants out. He is always hanging his food and brings the paint can, I just leave the food in my stuff sacks and leave in my backpack and don't have any problems. |

That looks like a great trip Brian, I am glad you were able to spend a few days out there. Gary and I did 8 days out there last time and it was very peaceful, spent two days just hanging around the cottonwoods. That old rusty spoon was carried up from the old 'rosa village by another friend of mine on a different trip. The old coffee pot seems to have disappeared from the cottonwoods. Cowboy camp spring (AKA stifferino) usually requires some maintenance, do you have any pictures of it? We cleared a lot of brush last time and got it flowing good but it usually does not last long.
Barrel spring looks overgrown also, we trimmed that way back last time.
Trail shrines...yes, there are many, it is believed the native americans built those up and many people toss another rock on top each time they pass by.
Nice TR, thanks for sharing. |

We cover the top collection pool of water with branches so the animals don't get back in there and stomp mud and dirt all down into it. I appreciate the confidence in my knowledge...but I am no expert and IMHO anyone that claims to know what the glyphs actually represent is probably just guessing from their own perspective. Other than the obvious human and animal motifs, take in some datura and think away.....
The radiating circle motifs are common and I have seen many that have leading/trailing ends that connect to other adjacent motifs. Just get out and find the petros/pictos and enjoy from your own perspective and research what you find if you feel motivated, I enjoy the exploration and discovery but will not claim to be highly educated on their meanings. |

Looking about I found this little nook in the rocks and found this old cookie can. There was something in it. And some weight to it. So perhaps some R&R worker stored his valuables? The top was pretty much rusted on but after some careful prying the top came off. And... Someones damn GEO cache. Wasnt used for a decade or more. Guess when the park made it illegal to place those they stop advertising it. Close call but no cigar.

There was a military jet that crashed into the hillside west of ghost mtn and my understanding is that the military did not want it found or recovered by civilians (or at least parts of it) so they dragged much of down the hillside and buried it into the sandy washes of Blair Valley. You can find 2 locations with half buried engine and wing parts. Up on the hillside and across the valley floor there are still many pieces scattered around you can find. Your pictures show a lot of iron so I also would suspect not airplane parts. Just MHO. |

3 come to mind. No cool photos on any, in fact all of them only had a few except the one with owner info, it was a fireman and had lots of firetruck photos...he did not want it back, time had past and he had moved on from it. His name is in the stifereno spring register many times....actually that was a blackberry phone now that I am thinking about it. I found a go pro in the sierras one year that survived a winter and had only a few snow pics before it was bounced out of someone's pack...it needed a new battery and I still have it. I have found probably a couple dozen knives over the years, the last one being a Gerber folding knife I found on the great sand dunes national park in Colorado, it has been clipped in my pocket very day since...great little knife. |

Salton Sea to Cuyamaca Lake-Best Route?

Rocko1 wrote:
Well, after mulling this over for a year, I have decided to not reinvent the wheel, do the extra mileage and take the SDTCT trail to Cuyamaca. Couple reasons. 1) It's much easier to cache water/water food. 2)I want to complete the SDTCT trail at some point and don't want to have to redo that section. 3) Less important but still valuable, much easier bail out points if needed.
Here is my plan for November:
Day 1-Salton Sea to 2 miles south of Villager Trail head off Thimble Trail. Pick up cache at at S22 and Ella Wash. 23-24 mile day. Day 2- Fonts Point Wash to Culp Valley Campground. Prob. cache water here to-not sure Pena is reliable. 18 mile day, large climb out of BS. Day 3-Culp to Box Canyon-Pick up Cache. 25 miles Day 4-Box Canyon up Mason Valley Truck Trail, cross S1 at Pedro Fages monument and head to Lake Cuyamaca. 13 miles.
Total will be 80 miles +/-. 10,000 gain, 5,400ft loss.

My son and I backpacked to Starfish Cove back in 2011, there was a BHS lamb skeleton in the wash. Starfish is a drainage, it can be bouldery and hard to navigate or open depending on the season. In another year my son and a couple of other friends backpacked from Little Blair over Whale Peak and down into Starfish via Hapaha, it was a tough 2 day trip that required water stashing prior. I would totally do it again.

Nice TR, thanks for sharing. Spend enough time in the desert and the cholla will just be normal and easy to deal with. We call it "jumping" cholla.
You can also climb False Sombrero peak at the end of the north fork, it is right there across the TP wash. |

I know I promised a long story but....a long story short:
Summer 2021 I quit my job and called it retirement since I could cash in on my pension. Sold our home and moved the family to Florida. Bought 5 acres in Rural Florida next to the Green Swamp Spend my days now doing whatever I want, hiking, garden, beer, whatever.
So, that is why I have very few desert posts these days. Hopefully I will start making some trips back out west to visit. Florida is definitely a different place.

Those look legit. I don't remember anything like that out there but then again that is a popular area. |

How close did you get to those gators? As close as I want, alligators are everywhere here.

Why Florida?
Mostly family choice for various reasons. I went along with it for financial reasons. I can live here on a 1/3 of what is costs to live in CA. Almost all of my family and my wife's family have left CA...so there it is.
I so miss the desert and mountains but am finding some new interests here. |

Damm that is close 😲 There are alligators in the retention ponds in the parking lot at Walmart, signs everywhere, different world here. No surprise to walk out to your car and find a gator underneath your car. |

That whole area is worth the time. McCain Valley and down to ABDSP is a special place, almost not visited by anyone anymore. So much to explore. History, remoteness, amazing place, hope everyone keeps it that way. |

I have camped up there several times, nice place with great views. BP visited me every time. Had a fox visit one night at dinner looking for hand outs. |

I have heard reports from other people that no longer see features in the sandstone walls out there and they were definitely old. |
