Great Way to explore ABDSP is by Truck Camper and a 4x4 truck. These make great base camps, and can get virtually anywhere through the park. I have been all the way through Fish Creek to Sanstone Canyon, Pinyon MTN Rd, Pinyon Wash, Indian Canyon, June Wash, Oriflamme Canyon, and Mine Wash. edited by anutami on 12/15/2011 |

Thanks for the welcome, came across this forum researching a trip to Cougar Canyon we are looking to do after xmas. Looks like this forum is right up my alley as I do approx 5-10 trips to ABDSP a year. Still trying to figure out how to post better pictures as I am not that computer savy.
I made it all the way to the Whale Peak Trailhead on Pinyon Mountain Road. Just put it in 4wd low and rolled right over everything. I have an 01 F350 diesel crew cab stick shift so I am very long. Only had 2 scrapes with the rails on my truck, and 1 scrape with the jacks on a rock. A kind soul in a 4runner guided me over the huge protruding boulder. No damage, but it was stressfull, especially with the kids wrestling around while I was driving. The road is also not level and had the truck at some crazy angles angles as well. Also had a lot of run in's with nolina, scraping my sides. That road is about as extreme as I want to go with my truck and camper. We camped at the trailhead then backpacked to the summit of whale peak for the night. It was my 6 and 4 year olds first backpacking trip! Pic below is our campsite at the whale peak trailhead. On the way out I put a DVD on for the kids to keep them settled down and only skipped the dvd player once! Headed up Pinyon Mtn Road

Gearing up for the hike: It was a bit cold at night and in the shade/ The rock scramble up the first section
we reached the top! Only took bribes of sour patch kids

There are lots of great places in the southern part of ABDSP to see. If you haven't been up through Indian Gorge into Indian Valley, you should definitely try that. I saw a bighorn ram in the gorge last year and they lurk all around there. Once in Indian Valley there are some nice old trails to the palm groves to the south toward Mountain Palm Spring. If you want to do some climbing, the climb up Sombrero Peak is wonderful with great views the whole way up from Indian Valley. There are morteros, caves, and artwork around the Indian Valley area too, not to mention wonderful campsites scattered all about. It is much better to primitive camp than stay in campgrounds, just my opinion.
I second that! Indian Gorge is one of my favorite places. Just camp 1 night out there and you will be hooked on primitive camping!
Very nice campsite at the end of North fork Trail
and cool boulder scrambling
South Fork (Trail to Sombrero Peak)
worlds greatest playground, campsite in the distance at the trailhead to the palm groves just passed Torete Canyon

Will keep my eye on the weather and head out there if it looks nice.

"A Red Tail Hawk that was injured somehow. I heared him screeing in the morning but when I drove out later he was in the middle of the road and would not move. I took a couple of photos and thought I could "shoo" him away but I ended having to use a broom to nudge him off to the side. I could not see any visible injury but he obviously was hurt somehow..I felt bad for him."
So all are aware...There is a wildlife rehabilitation center in Ramona, CA located right off Highland Valley road. They take in injured animals and try and rehabilitate them to realease them back into the wild.

Thank you for those links, do you have any experience with them? I was not able to find out much information about how to contact them to report an injured animal, only how to volunteer or to donate. I did not get the impression they were setup to have people call or report injured animals...maybe I missed something?
We have always brought the animals to them, but only have been birds fallen out of their nests. The address is 18740 Highland Valley Road, Ramona, Ca 92065 ph: (760) 789-2324 . I don't believe they come out and help with rescues, unless it is a larger animal. Since I live in Ramona, it makes it easier. |

Definitely will be going back! We did not make it to the bottom of the crater, we just stopped by for lunch before heading out to the Racetrack. The Racetrack proved to destroy my front shocks on my truck. With the camper on top I did not feel comfortable driving over 30mph over the washboard road and was only able to go approx 20-25mph, which proved to blow out my stock front shocks. I needed to upgrade my shocks anyway. |

I was too scared to air down with my truck camper on the back. I did not want to have a blow out or start to lose control. It was one bumpy ride! Luckily my truck camper is welded aluminum framed because if it was wood it would have probably fallen apart. I saw 3 other truck campers out there and they were all the fourwheel pop up campers like the one you want. I just replaced my shocks this week with Bilstein's.

Curious how much you air down your tires on the rough washboard? We aired down our Landcruiser to 10psi on the washboard roads down in Baja and that made a huge difference. Otherwise it felt like every bolt in the truck was rattling loose

I surprised them by bringing a teakettle and the kids paint supplies. They go to do some art work out in the middle of nowhere. The ziploc bag is where I put the water for them to wash off their paintbrushes. They couldn't believe how many teakettles were out there. The racetrack was very busy and it seemed like every jeep we passed was a rental. Can't wait to get back out and explore more with the kids. They love it as much as I do. Would love to take them out to Cougar Canyon area. Still debating if I could get my truck through boulder alley. Probably will just park it and walk in. One of my buddies took his jeep out there and said I could make it. When he was out there a guy in a brand new Audi Allroad went through boulder Alley and dinged it up pretty bad. I am trying to get him to send me some pictures he took and will post them.

Would be a great place to hang out and see some wildlife when there is water.

What is the vehicle and does it have a rack? I have Silver 4Runner Trail with Gobi rack and ladder.
My boy is a little bigger now (9 years old) but he still looks a lot like the picture and still loves his camoflage outfits.
I am at least 3 trip reports behind that I want to find time to post. If I post my Utah dessert trip there will be a photo of my vehicle as it got covered from top to bottom in mud (still dropping mud over a week after returning).
If I do not post this weekend it will not happen for a while as I am going to Death Valley the following weekend (going to try a winter summit of Telescope Peak and my boy has not seen the DV sites - he loves ghost towns, hiking, hot springs, it will be tough to choose what to see in a weekend where one day will be spent entirely hiking Telescope).
I bet you had so much fun in Utah. Would love to see some of you pics. We went to Zion National park, Arches and onward to Colorado Springs in 2010. Zion is amazing.
The vehicle is a Nissan Xterra, with a yakima load warrier rack. It was my wifes vehicle but we just got her a mazda 3 to get better gas mileage, and decided to keep the xterra. I was going to try and get it wired to tow behind my truck, but you can only tow the manual not the automatic. Looks like I will have to get a trailer if I want to tow it out to the desert.
When we were at DV in December Telescope peak looks like a great place. We made it to the kilns, and the pinyon pines in the area make one special place. It is a grown up version of Whale peak. There is a storm system coming this weekend and into the early next week, watch the weather as it looks to be unsettled for some time. Is your 9 year old going to summit with you? What a trooper if he is. Can't wait unitl my kids are big enough to do some of the more challenging hikes.

The Bighorn were walking on the railroad tracks and we followed them for about 500 yards driving next to them in the truck. I can't believe they were not afraid of the loud roar of the diesel, but they did stick very close together. Seeing them up close and how big their horns are is amazing. Just reading schad and your trip deserves quotes from a foot and afield. I wonder how many people have made this 5 star trek?..."the trek down the length of Carrizo Gorge is long, rugged, difficult, and memorable. It is one to be undertaken cautiously, with the right equipment and clothing. Essential are long pants and sturdy water proofed boots (and construction gloves, tree pruners, a kickass camera, and custom plastic armor)....one very long day is sufficient for speed demons who travel lightly. The last 6 miles, on jeep tracks in the sand, can be done at night."

I was closer to mortero palms on the find. I was skeptical about campers making the design because there were so many pottery schards and the rocks in the circle were nowhere around the area. They must have been carried there from quite a ways away. Also, the rocks were so clean. It looks like it has been there a long time. If it is native American park rangers need to put a sign because it is so close to the road. My son almost started picking up some of the cool rocks since he is the one who first found it. He is so used to rock hounding out there. Luckily I caught him in time and reminded him he had to just look and not touch. Good thing he is starting to love taking pictures. Wanted to post my rig and set up for anyone looking into getting a truck camper. It is the perfect "in between" a pop top and a large hard side camper. It is fully welded aluminum framed as opposed to wood framed camper. It has 30 gallons of fresh water and 6 gallons for the water heater. The bathroom is a one piece molded fiberglass, with a shower. It weighs about 2000 lbs fully loaded with water. I have it on an F350 long bed crew cab 4x4 diesel.
It has an outside shower, one 5 gallon propane tank (that is a drawback); it would be nice to have 2, dual 12 volt batteries, and a roof rack and ladder. ELECTRIC JACKS are key!
It has a full queen size bed and had a custom mattress made which is very comfortable; above is a fantastic roof fan which can suck air in or send it out.
I also have an LCD TV with built in DVD player for the kids, It is hooked up to a 300Watt Sure Sine quiet Inverter; the large view window is nice too
The Kitchen has a 3 burner stove w/ oven, above the kitchen there is tons of storage. The double sink is annoying because it limits counter space. My fruit ends up in the far one. I also have a water purifier which comes in handy.
Here is the furnace and the wave 3 catalytic heater. The furnace (on top) is loud and sucks the propane. It also uses considerable battery power when running the fan. The catalytic heater uses no battery power, and is way more efficient with propane. It emmits radiant heat, rather than heating the air, it heats up the surrounding things and they emmit heat (like the sun)
Here is the fridge and freezer combined. It is not a huge fridge, but does very well with about a weeks worth of food. Having a smaller fridge means lighter weight
The dinnette is nice, it folds into a bed and is pretty good size. I am 6'1" and can fully stretch out when sleeping down there, but it is not like sleeping up top in the queen bed. Above the dinnette is tons of storage, and it does not fold down into a bunk bed.
The bathroom is a one piece molded fiberglass so there are no seems anywhere. It is a wet bath and showers are a little tight but fine.
I upgraded all the ligths to LED lighting. It is uses way less battery power
I have a colman mach ac unit which is only 9k BTU's and can run easily off my honda eu2000 generator, (though I rarely ever use it)...I also have installed 2 huge solar panels which are about 300 watts
Here is my solar charge controller. I have it connected on two 12 volt deep cycle batteries. It keeps them charged and running. I spent 1 week in death valley and the batteries stayed at 90% the whole time
I also put a way better and more accurate battery monitor so you know exactly how many amps you are using and how much you have left
Here is my 300 watt inverter, the inverter takes 12v battery power and turns in into regular 110 outlet power. I have one outlet where the tv is and one outlet in the dinnette
My eagle camp is not a basement model, which means the water tank and holding tanks are not under the floor. This has it drawbacks w/ smaller capacity, but it keeps the camper not as high so I don't sway as much and can handle some roughter terrain.
Hope you enjoyed the tour edited by anutami on 2/23/2012 |

I guess there is a slice of ABDSP along Sunrise Hwy, but the Park is Closed. Does anyone know any history about why?
Headed north on sunrise hwy just passed Penny Pines
first section of the park on the West side of the road
Right across the street there is a jeep trail, that I think goes north towards oriflamme canyon...anyone been on this?
lucky 5 ranch is a ways more north...Isn't first section of the ranch on ABDSP?
Across for the lucky 5 ranch gate (on the east side of sunrise hwy) there is another jeep trail. This is a cattle gate and not locked. Anyone explored this area?

Should be named dragon canyon

Not sure what this is??? Some kind of campsite?

If anyone is looking to tackle "Boulder Alley" Here is a report on the different sections you can expect to find. After each section there is enough room stop and scout out the different sections ahead/ and or allow oncoming vehicles to pass. It is around 1/2 mile long.
This is the third crossing. If you have a 2wd you can probably get passed the crossing and park, if you look close there is a mini van parked
First true 4wd section
Second Section is the most challenging

Well, after scouting out Boulder Alley I decided I would wait and try to tackle it another time. Headed out to Oriflamme canyon to "Chill" try out our new hammock, and try for the 15 foot water fall schad talks about. This is the second time I have tried to get to the falls, and again failed to reach them. Just too much bushwacking. I did get a bit closer after following the old cow trail on the north bank and not trying to walk up the stream the enire way. Anyone been there? Any pics?
Road in you will need 4wd
morteros can be found around and pottery shards as well
when hiking up canyon stick the the northern bank, don't make the mistake I did by trying to bushwack up through the stream bed
Mostly overgrown cattle trail is difficult to navigate
Eventually you are forced into the canyon and have to bushwack pretty hard in some spots
decided to just head back and "chill out"

Great pictures! You sure get around a lot. You should create your own web site sometime with pictures, maps, and descriptions of all the places you've travelled to in AB park. That would be awesome! I've been going to the park for 8 years now, but looking at your reports shows me some new sections I need to explore.
Thanks, I guess you can say I'm hooked. I live in Ramona so it makes it pretty easy to head out on the 78 and spend the weekend exploring. As you know it also makes it easy having a rig w/ everything ready to go. All I need to to is pack some clothes and food and ready to head out.
I just want to let others know of the amazing places out there. I have checked out previous posts and gotton great ideas on trips and just want to return the favor of posting my trips. Still trying to figure out the whole google earth map thing, I don't travel with a GPS, and just have my maps. With my Iphone I guess now I can track my trips, and will try and do that. Send me a PM is you want to know any specific info.
Are you thinking of heading up boulder allley? I think you could totally make it up there, especially with your low profile camper. You may want to take your jacks off, as they may be the first thing to get damaged. |

Saturday I wanted to explore the calcite mine slot canyons we started the hike and the wind was crazy. The kids were getting cold so I went to plan B
I decided to head down into Palm Wash w/ the Camper: Instead of heading down the jeep trail, I drove out towards the salton sea and headed back west up the wash
It was about 9 miles up the wash and a few very tight places!
notice my step rail, had a run in w/ some sandstone
just when I thought the going was getting too tough found an awesome campstie
totally protected from the wind!

I have checked out the mines just driving by and I think they are all on private property. The ready relief mine if cut out through solid granite so I think it is one of the only ones that is still accessible (again on private property). I have always wanted to check them out but too scared to get in trouble. The golden chariot mine I believe is still operational. If you check them out would love to hear about it. A mine that is accessible is the Warlock mine, it is said to be sealed up, but I checked it out in September and is accessible. The mine goes back a staggering 1600 feet. I only ventured in a bit w/ the kids. If you want directions let me know. You access it through a trail on the east side of Julian via the original banner road (they used to collect a toll)
warlock mine/ used to be stocked w/ rations during during the cold war and doubled as a fallout shelter, so this mine is pretty safe to venture in
caved in mine along the original "banner road"

Alternate Trip to ABDSP in Summer

Even though this is not ABDSP it is a great alternate trip (and much safer) to still get your desert fix during the summer months. With temps starting to get up to uncomfortable level, and will soon be increasing even more you still have a great opportunity to seek out the Bighorn Sheep via the Colorado River through "Black Canyon". There are great camping spots, and hot springs you can go into also.
We took this trip 2 weeks ago
The only bummer to this trip is the 6 hour drive.
This Trip starts at the base of the hoover dam via an outfitter, http://www.downriveroutfitters.com/
or if you want to save $$$$ you can start on your own in Willow Beach, AZ, no permits needed and parking is free (this is what we opted for)
you also will need a small boat 65 hp or less wed-sat, or a kayak/canoe/stand up paddle board sun-sat.
instead of hiking through the desert carrying your water, just bring a water purifier and you have all the 50 degree water you want to drink. The water here is coming from the bottom of lake mead which is always around 50 degrees year round.
on our way there were bighorn right on the bank drinking a few feet away
if you are going up stream from willow beach, there is a little bit of a current, but no too bad (just stay as close to the shore as possible when paddling up stream)

With the weather way too extreme for me thought I would post a pic of an Olla I discovered about 10 years ago. As a kid I grew up right next to an Indian cermonial site in Ramona, Ca. I would come across broken pottery shards and has always been my dream to come across a fully intact Olla. In 6th grade I found a peace pipe and donated it to the Ramona Musuem. Exploring in ABDSP "way off trail" I came across a small cave. When I peaked inside there it was! A fully intact approx 3 gallon size Olla. I left it in place and just admired the awesome beauty of this thing, snapped a few pics and headed out. There are MANY treasures out there to find and please DO NOT touch, take, alter them in anyway if you come across them.

This is what I usually come across during cross country treks across the ABDSP. Some times in the strangest places. Sorry for the lousy cell phone pic. Sunglasses for scale. As you said please leave for others to enjoy!
Yeah I need to get back out there and check it out, but it is pretty remote and it will be very difficult to find again. I did not have a GPS back then and have no idea of any coordinates. I found this before kids and there is no way they would be able to make it out there. The opening is very large enough to fit two hands in. Also, the bottom of the olla is cracked, and there are little repair holes drilled out along the crack, like they put some kind of twine through it to try an patch it up. I really do not want it to be removed and put in a museum. I think it is much better out there for others to one day find. |

Well, I am going to have a new "brother in law" and come to find out he loves to hike! I know May is when it starts getting a bit warm and was thinking about doing San Jacinto, but want Plan A to be ABDSP. He has never been out to ABDSP and would love to get him "hooked", (and the other dudes going as well.).
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Just got back from Little Lakes Valley end of rock creek road @ Toms Place, CA in the Sierras, and if you have not been there it is an amazing place to go!!!!
here are a few pics
6+ hours in the truck with my 4 year old Brett, 7 year old Brenna, and our 4 year old golden retriever rusty was a bit crazy! (no wonder my wife wanted to stay home) notice the head phones
Nice new Ranger Station in Lone Pipe where we picked up our permits (you can reserve them online now @ recreation.gov)
Finally made it to the trail head! There is a backpackers camp in the parking lot, we just camped in the truck camper to acclimate since it is 10k feet in elevation.
Where is all the gear you ask?
on my back of course!
great fishing in the lakes and streams
Area is know for relatively easy trail (was very crowded on trail, but once off trail nobody around)
