I'm glad you had a successful, albeit tough trip Daren. I know what you mean about water and having to lug every drop along that ridge. I had a failed attempt a few years ago when I hiked over from Cactus Spring with a planned exit at S22 and ended bailing out into Martinez (the only sure bet for water at the time). Thanks again for the report. |

I love the picture of the Toad at Hidden Spring and I'm amazed that those little guys can survive year round in such a small harsh area. My condolences on your truck also. What time of day did you guys make it up to Dawns? |

Ranching around Anza Borrego

Sorry if this is old news to any of you. But I just stumbled across this report that covers a lot of the old ranching and homesteading history in and around Anza Borrego. If you've ever wondered how an area in the park got its name or just who put that old trough and windmill out in the middle of that field, you might find the answer here.

Wow, I cant believe that so little has changed on those in 13 years. Glad to hear that things are slowly working out. Just curious, was the camper and truck treated as two separate claims/settlements? |

Looks like a great trip Nolan. I can't wait until my little ones are able to "keep up" on treks with dad
Its amazing how many of those guzzlers there are. On google earth you can pretty easily make out the square collectors, with quite a few spread out along the nort side of the Pinyon Mountains. Does anyone have an idea of total number of these in the park? I've also ran across these in Cleveland Nat Forest and always wondered who specifically oversaw/maintained them. |

Florian it looked like a good trip and I especially like the Bombing Range picture. I was curious of course about the Dust Experiment devices so I did some Google Sleuthing. I didn't expect to find anything as they sure do look like some cheesy practical joke.
However.... they appear to be legitimate: http://ees.kuleuven.be/geography/projects/151/?print=1
Although, "made out of bundt cake pans" didn't turn anything up
I guess we can add "Aeolian Marble Dust Collector" to the Things Found in the Desert list.
Thanks again for sharing. |

As always, it looks like you had another interesting trip. As a fellow user, I can attest to the awesomeness of Dirty Girls, however its always awkward when a fellow hiker asks "Who makes those gaiters?" Ok, here we go... |

What a great trip with the bonus of water. Does anyone know if a hike down Cottonwood Canyon from the PCT/ Sunrise HWY is feasible? |

Looks like a great trip with nice weather. Interesting point about the pinyons growing in the shade of boulders. Those trees have always been such a special and unique site in the desert and it’s a shame to witness their demise. The natural rock wall that you found… Is that natural as in nature made or is it a dry stack wall like it appears? Very neat. Thanks! |
