2/1/2013 Topic: Borrego off trail camping anutami	Thanks for posting and welcome This forum is a great resource. Most of the amazing areas of ABDSP have trip reports with photos to give you a good idea of what you are getting yourself into. Just make sure when you are traveling on the jeep trails your vehicle is equipped with the proper saftey gear and although you don't need 4wd in many areas it is always better to have it just in case. If you have any questions about a specific area that interestes you in the park (It is huge and diverse) don't hesitate to start a thread. The primitive camping areas are a great place to start, but you will soon realize finding a totally seculded spot deep in a canyon or wash is what the park is all about. you will also be able find better protection from the wind so your tent won't look like the ones in the youtube video...some of the tents looked like there were bodies in there keeping them from blowing away....So Hilarious edited by anutami on 2/1/2013

2/8/2013 Topic: Where's The Wind? anutami	If a mega wind farm was being constructed 1/2 mile from my house and I had to look at blinking red lights every night I guarantee I would be a pain in the ass too. Pattern even hassled me (the security patrol vehicle) when I drove through the area with my kids and camper. It seems they think they own the area and now are attacking people!!!!

Most people don't want to pay to enter the campground so you always have the place to yourself. It was reaally windy in the meadow which blew all the snow off the tables (thats why brett was so bundled).

I have seen some pretty cool rack systems out there. 3/11/2013 Topic: Elephant Knees anutami	I have been itching to get back out in the park and decided to take a short trip to Elephant Knees (thanks for the suggestion Daren) to search for some fossils and get a different perspecitve of the park. On the way out we encoutered some snow and rainbows and sinking pits of clay Beautiful Washes Sleeping at a slant all night (stuck in the clay pit all night), I was up at the crack of dawn and got some morning photos I called the ranger headquarters on Friday to see if there were any rangers in the area, and all were off for the day. I am greatful Ranger Steve got the message and headed out to help me on Saturday morning. He is a great guy for helping me. We both put our rigs in 4wd LOW and he backed up while I drove forward! Wheels spun for a bit, but then the rig started to move. He would not even accept a tip or a soda or anything. All I could do was give him a big man hug. I will just include his tip in my next donation to the Anza Borrego Foundation. I learned my lesson not to drive on redish ground with salt crust anymore. It was like driving into the La Brea CLAY Pits. Now I know where all the Native Americans made all those ollas from. Every shovel full to try and dig the rig out was approx 15lbs! I was soooo sore the morning. It was a great work out. After about 15 hours of being delayed we could set our sites on Elephant Knees there are ancient reefs all over the place. The kids and I for that matter could not believe this was once a shallow ocean!!! Millions and Millions of fossilized sea life all over On another planet...Tatooine? Any Sand People around here? We took Direct route up Views looking to the South/ southwest from the top Kids had a blast on the way down. And even more of blast when they found this. This really made then believe this actually was an Ocean!!!

3/12/2013 Topic: Elephant Knees anutami	The road is easily accessible with a 2wd vehicle with high clearance (right now). I tried all the tricks to get out of the clay...dropped my psi 25. Tried to suck pieces of 2x4 under the tires, tried to dig out under the tires and hammer pieces of 2x4. Dug out and piled a bunch of rocks. Got a huge flat boulder and tried to jack up the rear end, but the rock kept sinking....I just ordered a hi-lift jack http://www.hi-lift.com/hi-lift-jacks/index.html though it wouldn't have worked in the clay.

It is just the right road for 2wd high clearance. You can make it all the way to the end of the south fork and hike sombrero peak.

You are going to LOVE driving through and won't believe your eyes. The end of oyster shell wash is great, or lycium wash. I am not sure why anyone would use the campground near split mountain other than being concerned about flash floods during the night...i don't think anyone has posted a trip report on the wind caves yet. I have yet to check them out, as they are always packed with cars and usually groups of boyscouts.

It was very rugged and slow going. some pics The start of the journey: Kelly and Hurly (Hurly lost his life in Baja the following month getting nailed by a dune buggy @ Scorpion Bay the rugged canyon This was before children when we lived on the wild side There were turtles sunning themselves on the rocks and were not afraid of humans. You could pick them right up. These were the easy parts and there were not many of them We hiked all day and were super tired. I remember setting up camp and being sooo hungry getting read to boil some water and forgot to bring fuel for my stove! This is the 100ft water fall schad describes in the hike (tallest falls on the san diego river) This was a super memorable hike my wife and I still talk about today.

The Bypass Rd, also know as Boulder Alley is just a steep bumpy road now days. I'm toying with the idea of trying to do it in a 2 wd vehicle. Parked at 3rd crossing was an Audi A4 the other day. 4/8/2013 Topic: Cougar Canyon and Boulder Alley anutami	I have wanted to do a backpack trip with my family into cougar canyon for some time and it was finally the time As the temps were getting very warm and my kids don't to well in the heat I decided it would be best and "cheat" by driving up through "boulder alley" with our stock 4x4 xterra. the caravan into coyote canyon The first crossing, no water Second crossing we set up camp Friday just passed the second crossing and just hung out enjoying the desert... A boy and his dog Nice shot of a damselfy? I think (wings parallel to the body when at rest) enjoying the second crossing This little guy enjoying himself Heading through the 3rd crossing hanging out and exploring just before tackling the bypass route up "boulder alley" heading on up and up and up We made it up and the hike in is only about 1 mile we were hoping for water, we also finally invensted in some nice hats! I was getting a bit worried there was not going to be any water. Rusty was sure ready for a soak I was tempted to photoshop a corona in his paw I love tthis place...and so do the kids I could not believe the bees were not around. we had the place all to ourselves refreshing! I love this canyon Some blooms, if you are ever feeling sad just gives these shots a look...did I say I love the desert nice Indian cave not sure if this is legit or not... I looked up and noticed a lizard running on the ceiling! pools around every corner This is about the farthest we got up the canyon. It is pretty rugged...hopefully next time we will get to the 20ft falls and pool schad talks about headed back down and set up camp sorry for the long post but this is pretty much it for me on trips to ABDSP until the fall. I haven't been up that canyon for probably 20 years but your pics brought back some good memories for me. Thanks! Glad you liked them Rusty was unsure on some of the boulder scrambling we had to do. I had to lift him over several boulders because I didn't want him to try and run through the cat claw. Unfortunatly there is a no dogs allowed sign at the beginning of the trailhead I was not aware of. After all the planning involved and gas spent to drive two vehicles out there I was not about to turn around. Does anyone know why horses are allowed on the trail, but not dogs?

It is a lot easier to take the truck and camper with all the supplies stocked in there. I just load up some food, clothes and ready to go. The paint on the truck and fiberglass on the camper is not so pristine.

Took ec085 coming home from el centro on Friday and checked a few things out You were not joking, there are shells out there High water mark on lake cahuilla It looks like a war zone out there Bullet hole in the Tufa New tahoe performed great! Started from dunaway road off the 8 freeway and ended up at split mountain rd. there was some sketchy soft sand rutted out sections on ec085
4/27/2013 Topic: Dos Cabezas and Goat Canyon anutami	Great photos! 11 miles for a 9 year old in 1 day is amazing. Something he will never forget. The collapsed tunnel is pretty dramatic (and very difficult to get to I might add) with all the beams splintered and concrete smashed. You get a feeling of not wanting to stay in there too long.

Is that something I can look forward to?... you bring your kids along on your adventures throughout their youth and they end up pursuing their own adventures? I wonder with the improving economy and the feds push for amnesty if we will see more illegal /undocumented movement through ABDSP. It will be interesting as it seems to have been relatively quite out there with the dismal economy but as things pick up we are the eyes and ears of the southern border. Also....your zoom is amazing, on my point and shoot if I zoom in the quality is so poor it is not worth using the function edited by anutami on 4/27/2013
4/27/2013 Topic: Culp Valley and Upper Hellhole Canyon anutami	Nice rattler, we are on our 3rd rattle snake sighting at our house !!! Usually the big daddy's are pretty docile. Did you provoke that one for a photo op? That is a great shot. I am bummed how rattlers have been given a bad wrap and are so easily "discarded". We will usually relocate them unless a nasty baby one. I drove through the culp valley campground a while back and all the sites seem horrible. Tons of erosion and they all have extreme grades. Are there any sites worth visiting?

4/29/2013 Topic: Inspiration Wash: Must Do anutami	This is fun to drive all the way out old springs open space preserve out near the dump in borrego. you will encounter sand dunes and 4wd is a must. Took this trip a while back when heading home from palm springs on a business trip. It is nice to be able to take different "long cuts" on the way home. I have a goal of one day driving on all 500 miles of jeep trails in ABDSP. top of the wash with great views. This also would make a very nice campsite and stargazing top of the bluff looking south

I hope one day you publish a book of all the wild, desolate and remote places. Nice work on box spring, looks like it has been awhile since someone has been there. I saw the head of a huge lizard up cougar canyon, guessing it was the same. Love the gopher snake photo amongst the cholla and then the double rainbow....wow, yet another amazing trip, where are you headed next?

Felt like I was watching national geographic. All you have to do now is find someone with a deep voice to add some narration wish I could have followed you up boulder alley. I know many of us using this forum enjoy different things and we could incorporate most of them for all that are interested. Let me know if this is a possibility and we could start planning something.
6/12/2013 Topic: ABDSP forum rally anutami	It would be cool to do it on a weekend with a meteor shower, it appears the Leonid meteor shower will peak around the weekend of Nov 16th and 17th. It would be great if everyone going had a 4x4 vehicle to get to collins valley, hapapha flat, or Piedras grandes/dos cabezas area or another similar location. From there we could plan an all day hike or backpack trip an then stargazing. Collins valley to palm canyon hike? Another option is to allow a car campsite location in an accessible 2wd location in little Blair, and hike whale peak camp on the summit type trip with others option of a 1/2 day hike smugglers or yaquitec. Or Indian gorge camp and rockhouse canyon (southern end) hike. The options are endless and it depends on all those who wanted to attend. So it would be more of a selected campsite and various options based on all attending. If you wanted to do a multi day trip it would be a great opportunity to hang out for a bit and get picked up or dropped off somewhere.

Langley for the first time!!) to see a large plume of smoke in our backcountry looks like it is the Chariot Fire east of Sunrise Hwy, 9 miles southeast of Julian, It has already burned 2,500 acres and is 10% contained. 8/18/2013 Topic: Mt. Laguna Burn Area anutami	I love that view! Been camping at s. carlsbad state beach for the last 25 years and the beach has always been rocky. Within the last year or so the north part of the beach is now covered in deep sand. With all the recent major fires in our area I can't help but think all the sand is due to all the erosion, can anyone shed some light on this? 9/10/2013 Topic: Flood damage around Borrego Springs anutami	I can't believe how green it is out there! Must have been scary being without power for so long! When we had that huge power outage a while back I hooked up my honda generator to keep the fridge going and our direct tv so we could watch the news. Also it gives some piece of mind having our camper with the solar set up to know we could survive a bit more comfortable if something major happened. I guess it is what you call a "bug out vehicle"

Tom Death Valley is soooo huge there are many many areas, We spent several days out there, we first drove into Wildrose camp (free), and checked out the Charcoal Kilns, Eureka Mine and Aguereberry Point. The Kilns The Next few days we headed up to Marble Canyon and Offroad camped (for free in there) It was a pretty rugged road, but few people back in there. Marble canyon is a must see and there is some rock art Marble Canyon We then headed to the town of Beatty for a cheap hotel and replentish of supplies, we checked out the ghost town of Rhyolite which was pretty cool...Don't get gas in Furnace Creek, It is way better to drive to Beatty for gas as it will probably be $2.00 a gallon difference!! We headed back into DVNP via Titus Canyon Road which is another Must do!! What a drive!! From titus Canyon road we headed north to the Ubehebe crater, and the Racetrack which were awesome, but the Racetrack was the where we saw most of the people. We were all about the backcountry camping and the only campground we stayed at was Wildrose. Hope that helps
